A search and rescue mission is currently underway for Elizabeth Pollard.

A Pennsylvania grandmother who went missing while looking for her cat is believed to have fallen into a deep sinkhole, authorities said.

A search and rescue mission is currently underway in Unity Township for Elizabeth Pollard, Pennsylvania State Police said Tuesday.

Pollard was reported missing by a family member shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Trooper Steve Limani.

Pollard was last seen around 5 p.m. Monday, Limani said. The family member said Pollard had gone out to look for her cat Monday afternoon but has not been heard from since, he said.

Pollard's vehicle was located shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday with her 5-year-old granddaughter inside, though Pollard was nowhere to be seen, police said.

"At that point in time we realized this could be a very bad situation," Limani told reporters during a press briefing midday Tuesday.

While searching for Pollard in the area, troopers found an apparent sinkhole with an opening about the "size of a manhole" 15 to 20 feet away from the vehicle, Limani said.

Emergency responders were called to the scene in what is currently being considered a rescue mission, authorities said. Local firefighters, a technical rescue team and the state's Bureau of Mine Safety are among those working alongside an excavation team to remove dirt to access the sinkhole, Limani said.

The current evidence points toward Pollard being in the sinkhole, Limani said.

"We don't feel a reason that we should be looking elsewhere," he said.

The sinkhole appears to have been created during the time that Pollard was walking around, Limani said, noting that there is no evidence that the hole was there before she started looking for her cat.

A camera inserted into the opening of the sinkhole showed a "big void, and it was all different depths," Marguerite Fire Chief Scot Graham told reporters during the press briefing.

"The process is long and it is tedious," Graham said.

A camera did not pick up any sounds, though authorities did see a "modern-type" shoe in the sinkhole, according to Pleasant Unity Fire Chief John Bacha.

The search will continue as long as needed pending any safety concerns, Limani said.

The sinkhole is preliminarily believed to be tied to historic mining in an abandoned underground coal mine that was last operated in 1952, according to the state's Department of Environmental Protection. The depth to the coal seam in this area is approximately 20 feet, a department spokesperson said.

Once the scene is clear, the department will investigate the site "to determine if this issue is the result of historic mine subsidence," the spokesperson said.

Pollard's granddaughter is safe, despite the cold temperatures overnight, and is currently with her parents, Limani said.

The family is asking for privacy at this time and is hoping for "good news," he said.

"We need to get a little bit lucky," Limani said. "We're going to do everything we can."

How terrifying to be walking and just fall through a hole that wasn't even there before.

She was out looking for her cat "Pepper" at the time. I do hope they find her alive, but it's looking more and more like she may have been swept away somehow. She's not able to call for help and that points to either her not being alive anymore or not being near the opening anymore.

The fact that sinkholes exist is so scary to me. Have they ever made a scary movie about them? They should.

Rescuers contemplated the safest way Wednesday to search for a woman who apparently fell into a Pennsylvania sinkhole while looking for her lost cat, saying a crumbling old coal mine was complicating efforts and endangering workers.

“The integrity of that mine is starting to become compromised,” Trooper Steve Limani told reporters.

Rescuers had been using water to break down clay and dirt to remove it from the mine, but that action was making conditions dangerous “for potential other mine subsidence to take place,” he said.

On Tuesday, they lowered a pole camera with a sensitive listening device into the hole, but it detected nothing. A camera lowered into the hole showed what could be a shoe about 30 feet (9 meters) below the surface, Limani said.

If the hole is that deep I don't think she would survive the fall. Putting water into a sinkhole isn't the brightest idea, it's only going to get bigger.

Agree, RBW. I hope she is safe, but it is not sounding good.

The search for a grandmother who apparently fell into a sinkhole while looking for her cat earlier this week in a coal mine town about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh is now a recovery mission.

The hunt for Elizabeth Pollard entered day three Thursday, Pennsylvania State Police spokesperson Trooper Steve Limani told USA TODAY.

"We were at it again as soon as the sun came up," Limani said late Thursday morning, referencing attempts by crews to locate the 64-year-old woman who vanished Monday night. "Nothing yet."

"It’s now a matter of trying to find her and do right by her family,” Limani said, adding there have been no signs of life since she disappeared.

The days-long search for a Pennsylvania grandmother, who fell through a sinkhole while searching for her cat, ended in tragedy when rescuers found the woman's body, authorities said Friday.

The remains of Elizabeth Pollard, 64, were found at about 11:05 a.m. about 30 feet below surface, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Steve Limani told reporters.

Pollard was last seen around 5 p.m. on Monday in Unity Township, about 40 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. She fell through a sinkhole and into a decades-old mine shaft.
With the rescue and recovery complete, engineers will work to fortify any points of possible erosion.

"They’re going to talk about putting a grout in there, eventually and shoring up the entire entire area," Limani said.

With abandoned mines dotting much of southwestern Pennsylvania, authorities urged residents to keep an eye out for possible sinkholes and call the state.

How can you look for sinkholes when they are not there until you step into it?

And I agree RBW water in a sinkhole? Dumbest shit Ive heard in awhile.

Poor lady was just looking for her cat.

Thank goodness her granddaughter stayed put in the car, and didnt go out looking for her. We could have had a double tragedy.
