An argument over turning off the lights led Corey Burke to kill her father with an ice ax, she told a detective, according to new charges filed in King County.
A deputy prosecutor wrote she “appeared to be having a mental health crisis.”
Her father, Timothy Burke, 67, had a litany of health issues and rarely left the house, where the two lived together in Rainier Valley, according to a Seattle police report.
Prosecutors charged the 31-year-old daughter with first-degree murder Friday in King County Superior Court.Police were dispatched around 8 p.m. Nov. 5 for reports of someone breaking out the windows of a home. An officer reported Corey Burke exited the split-level home with blood on her face. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center for a mental health evaluation.
Meanwhile, police searched the house and found Timothy Burke’s body in the basement. Officers discovered a silver-and-blue ice climbing ax on the floor, with blood on it.
Timothy Burke had suffered wounds to his head and torso, according to the King County medical examiner’s report.
The next day at the hospital, Corey Burke told police she used the ax to kill her father and that she also strangled him. She believed there was “something important” about Election Day, and that she felt overwhelmed with emotion.https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle...y-charges-say/“Corey stated (when) her father started arguing with her, about the lights being shut off, that she ‘just freaked out."
At one point, the woman reportedly whispered to the detective: “I killed him.”
Corey Burke reported she had been working on setting emotional boundaries with her father. She wanted to help people “change their attachment to their parents,” but that she felt “hyper focused and disorganized” about her own father.
After she killed him, Corey Burke reported, she went upstairs and broke the windows of the house as “an act of liberation.”
