Derek Sink (39) found dead in a tanning bed 3 days after he was last seen by his family

A missing man was discovered dead in a Planet Fitness tanning bed Monday three days after he walked into one of the gym’s locations in Indianapolis, authorities and loved ones said.

The body of Derek Sink, 39, was found around 9 a.m. — about four hours after the fitness center opened for business, according to reports.

The day before, Sink was reported missing by family who had not heard from him since Friday, the Indianapolis Star reported, citing police records.

A woman who visited the gym Monday morning told WTHR a foul smell was wafting through the building before the body was found in the tanning bed.

That's crazy. How on earth did Planet Fitness not go in there to clean or something?

Seriously. Was he there the whole 3 days? It's not clear....said he was missing for 3 days, but I guess that doesn't mean he was there the whole time.

You have a good point @Nic. I'm assuming if the smell was as bad as described that it was the full three days though

I saw this in my feed the other day and some of the people commenting were claiming that this location shuts down over the weekend, but the vast majority said that isn't true. I could see this if they were closed over the weekend, but then again they MUST have people that are supposed to clean the place. It's the same as with that woman found dead at her desk at Wells Fargo. FIRE THE CLEANING CREW. Honestly.

Tanning beds are supposed to be cleaned after each use by staff. I mean, that is pretty much standard. So, he was in the tanning bed the entire time, over the weekend, and no one even went into the room? That just doesn't make sense.

Not to mention, you're not supposed to be in them for too long either. I've only been in a few in my day, but the staff monitor how long you're in there in case you fall asleep. So, they obviously didn't do their due diligence on this one.

I think the beds have automatic shut offs built into them. At least I hope so.

I doubt he went there to tan, most likely he just crawled into a place to sleep. Though, tanning beds aren't comfy

Planet Fitness said they were "deeply saddened by the passing of one of our members" and noted the owner of the franchise was working with authorities on the investigation.

"At Planet Fitness, we have robust operational brand protocols in place, as the safety and well-being of our members is our top priority," Chief Corporate Affairs Officer McCall Gosselin told the publication. "We are working closely with our local franchisee to ensure they are upholding those brand protocols.”

A sign on the door of the building noted that "tanning was currently unavailable," WTHR reported.

Family told the station 39-year-old Derek Sink was identified as the man found in the bed, saying he went into a tanning bed on Friday and was found dead there Monday morning.

They said he struggled with drugs and a needle was found in the room with him, though no cause of death has been released.
