Dustin Kjersem (35) bludgeoned to death and the death was initially blamed on a bear

A suspect has been arrested nearly three weeks after a Montana camper was found brutally killed in an attack that was initially reported as a bear attack, authorities said late Wednesday.

The Gallatin County Sheriff's Office said it had identified a suspect in the murder of Dustin Kjersem, who was found dead in his tent earlier this month. The suspect, who was not identified, was in custody on unrelated charges, authorities said.

Kjersem, 35, was found dead earlier this month by a friend who reported Kjersem appeared to have been killed by a bear — but officials soon discovered the camper was actually the victim of a brutal murder.

Earlier this month, a friend discovered Kjersem's body in a tent at a makeshift campsite along Moose Creek Road and called 911, telling responders the death appeared to have been caused by a bear attack, the sheriff's office previously said.

But a state wildlife official found no signs of bear activity, and investigators said they soon found evidence of a "vicious attack." An autopsy later showed Kjersem sustained "multiple chop wounds," including to his skull.

OMG I read about this dude on the news, they originally assumed he was attacked by a bear. I did not connect that to this Nicholas Hamlett story. Crazy.

I think it's the same story...maybe not? Maybe I just saw that they both were initially blamed on a bear and thought they were the same story?

After doing some more reading I think they are two different stories. Someone tell me if they are and I will separate this.

Ohhhh okay. I think it is separate. May be too soon to tell, as they arrested the guy in the fake bear attack but have not released his name (that I know of).

All I know is don't go out in the woods and you won't get killed and have someone blame it on a poor innocent bear.

Also, if you saw the story before, why didn't you post it? Also, I think it is two different stories after researching Nichlas Hamlett. He's still at large.

So, I thought we already had this one? Is there another case where it was blamed on a bear or a fall from a cliff or something of that nature?

LMAO, yes, there's another one. I originally thought this was the same case too, and posted it to that thread and updated the headline. That's why Nic posted her posts above and I was confused about it. I did some more digging and I believe they are two separate cases, as they still haven't caught the guy in the other case.

The bears are getting falsely accused!

It was a total déjà vu moment for me. Those poor bears.

When Dustin Kjersem’s girlfriend found his body at a campsite in the Montana woods, she suspected Kjersem had been killed by a bear, because of the severity his wounds. But police say a man did it — and that they’ve now arrested a suspect who has admitted to the crime.

The accused killer “removed items from the campsite he believed had evidence that could tie him to the crime,” including an axe used against Kjersem, Gallatin County Sheriff Dan Springer said in a news briefing on Thursday.

But he missed a beer can, Springer said. Using DNA from the can, the Montana state crime lab was able to find a match: Daren Christopher Abbey.

“This individual confessed to the murder of Dustin Kjersem,” the sheriff said of Abbey, who is 41.

Abbey is being held in Butte on a charge of deliberate homicide, as well as two counts of tampering with evidence. He has been denied bond, according to Gallatin County records.

State correction department records show Abbey has four or more arrests for DUI, raising the offense to the felony level. He has multiple tattoos on his abdomen and arms, including swastikas and Viking symbols.

Investigators are still working to determine a motive for the killing.

Okay, so that explains the implication of the bear. Thank goodness they didn't hunt down an innocent bear and euthanize it thinking it had killed him.

Curious to know a motive. Sounds like this was a stranger killing.

He beat him so badly that they thought a bear did it screams personal to me. If not this guy is a serial killer. He obviously has a severe anger issue.

Twin's DNA, photos helped capture alleged killer

According to charging documents filed in Gallatin County District Court, Abbey, 41, was identified as a suspect in the murder of Kjersem through DNA found on a beer can that was left near the scene of the crime, as well as photos from surveillance cameras at a nearby resort.

The next day, the Montana State Crime Lab confirmed that DNA located on a beer can retrieved from the crime scene matched two previous offenders. The DNA matched Daren Abbey and Dustin Abbey, who are believed by law enforcement to be twins, as they share a date of birth.

Court documents say that Dustin Abbey is currently in the custody of the Montana Department of Corrections at the Crossroads Correctional Facility in Shelby, Montana since Sept. 17, 2024.

A detective compared Daren Abbey's driver's license photograph and his CONWEB photograph to the images taken from the Big Sky Resort camera footage. The person matched the description and appeared to the detective to be Daren Abbey.
