Chainti Means (33), Roman Rossman (9), & Mecca Means (5 m/o) missing and presumed dead after going over Niagara Falls

A woman and her two children are presumed dead after going over Niagara Falls in an incident police have described as "intentional in nature."

New York State Police identified the three individuals as 33-year-old Chaianti Means, Roman Rossman, 9, and 5-month old Mecca Means.

A spokesperson for state police tells PEOPLE the woman was the mother of the two children and that recovery efforts are underway.

Police say the three were on Luna Island in Niagara Falls, N.Y., when they crossed over a guardrail. The incident occurred just after 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

She decided to do this at one of our favorite places. WE go there so often, year round. We knew, when this story first broke, exactly what this mother had done. There was no way that this was accidental, it took a bit of effort to do and how she convinced her older child to go over is a question we'll never see answered. They won't find the bodies, there are so many bodies at the base of the Falls. Or, even worse, someday they may float up and some boat full of families will see them.
