The sheriff's department said 28-year-old Zelig Williams was last seen at his home in the 400 block of Longwood Road in Columbia on Oct. 3.

Deputies said a family member contacted them the next day and said they had not heard or seen him. They were concerned since going without contacting anyone is unlike Williams. Investigators said Williams needs prescription medication.

Further investigation suggested he may have been driving in the area of Congaree National Park. A park spokesperson later clarified details released by the sheriff's department regarding where the vehicle was found. According to the spokesperson, the vehicle was found in the parking lot of the Wateree Passage of the Palmetto Trail at the intersection of U.S. 601 and Bluff Road, which is about a mile north of the closest portion of the park and not on its grounds.

Park authorities said there was no active search for Williams in the park.

The sheriff's department asked anyone with information on Williams to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.

It’s been more than a week since a Broadway dancer who delighted crowds while performing in Tony Award-winning shows such as “Hamilton” went missing, and his family pleaded Sunday for any information that could lead to his safe return.

Zelig Williams, 28, was staying with his mother in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, since the summer and had been hosting specialized dance workshops. Kathy Williams last saw her son on the morning of Oct. 3 and everything seemed normal when he left, her cousin Mieoki Corbett Jacobs told NBC News.

Later that day, one of her son’s friends living in New York City reached out to say they received an SOS alert on their phone on Oct. 3 indicating the dancer had been in a car crash.

Police found his car overnight in the early hours of Oct. 5 parked in a lot for the Palmetto Trail, near Wateree, South Carolina, with no signs of a crash, Corbett Jacobs said.

The family of a Broadway dancer who’s been missing for nearly two weeks has hired a private investigator to assist in their desperate search to find him and bring him home.

Chandra Cleveland, the private investigator hired by the family to help locate Williams, said she believes his case is an example of “missing while Black syndrome,” where the disappearances of Black men and women receive little to no attention.

Williams’ mother saw him leave home just before 10 a.m. on October 3, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s department. Minutes later, Williams’ friends in New York received a concerning message from his iPhone, Corbett-Jacobs said.

“At 10:10, three of his friends received an SOS ping from his cell phone, which is not a lot of time after leaving the house,” Corbett-Jacobs said. Those friends reached out to Williams’ mother to share their concerns.

The sheriff’s department told CNN its deputies are investigating the potential of foul play and are “following up on all leads and all information” in the case.

@Nic - with the newer iPhones/IOS, you have the option to send an SOS when you are shutting your phone down.

This does not bode well at all. I would initially think that he left of his own accord, possibly to unalive himself, but why would he send an SOS message if he was doing that. I suppose so that he would be found, but it could be because he ran in to trouble with someone. Either way, two weeks with no activity isn't a good sign.
