Starting Monday, Sept. 16, Carly Madison Gregg, 15, will stand trial for the murder of her 40-year-old mother and attempted murder of her stepfather.

Gregg, who was 14 at the time of the offense, allegedly shot and killed her mom, Ashley Smylie, and injured her stepfather, Heath Smylie, at the family's Brandon home in March. By May, a grand jury had indicted Gregg, as an adult, on the counts of first-degree murder, attempted murder and tampering with evidence.
During an April preliminary hearing, Rankin County investigator Zachary Cotton testified Gregg opened fire multiple times at her mother after Ashely “took some items” out of Gregg’s bedroom at the Brandon home. Then, Gregg allegedly invited a friend over claiming there was an “emergency” only to show the friend her mother’s dead body. The investigator said Gregg told that same friend how there were “two for the head, one for the chest” waiting for Heath.

According to Cotton, after Gregg shot her mother two times in the face and once below the chin, Gregg texted Heath from her mom’s phone to lure her stepdad to the house. Heath allegedly fought back and grabbed the gun before Gregg fled the scene by hopping a fence, prompting authorities to track her movements by helicopter and arrest her a short time after the incident. Cotton said the stepfather said Gregg’s “eyes were really big, like she had seen a demon or something to that effect” when the two struggled over the gun.

Inviting her friend over to see her mom's body does not sound like a psychotic break to me.

@Ang, I don't think so either. I read somewhere else that her mom took her vape pens from her room. I think she was just in a rage and did whatever she wanted.

Kids are fucking scary these days. They RAGE when their tablets or vapes or video games are taken away from them and it seems like they've become desensitized to murder. It's become so much the norm to kill anyone that gets in your way without a second thought. It confirms for me that I made the right choice not having children and I'm just going to be happy in my little corner of the village and hide away from it all.

There’s a clip of her and stepdad smiling and making faces at each other in the courtroom which has sparked rumors he was in on it.

@of_corpse_not, that makes me wonder if something was going on between them.

After two hours of deliberations, the jury found Carly Gregg guilty on all counts. Gregg was charged with murder and aggravated assault in the March 19 shooting that killed her mother, Ashley Smylie, and wounded her stepfather, Heath Smylie. She was also charged with tampering with evidence for hiding a security camera after the shooting.

The jury was given the option of finding Gregg guilty or not guilty by reason of insanity.

Gregg was also given a life sentence for shooting her stepfather and 10 years in prison for tampering with evidence. Attorneys said she was not given the opportunity for parole.

If anything, he maybe wanted to get rid of the two of them so convinced the daughter to kill her and only injure him knowing that she would be locked away for it. Not sure though.
