Collin Griffith (17) arrested in mother's stabbing death, 19 months after fatally shooting father

A Florida teenager has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of his mother, less than two years after he was arrested for fatally shooting his father but never charged, authorities said.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said during a Wednesday press briefing that the teen had previously allegedly threatened to kill his mother before Sunday's "cold-blooded murder."

The stabbing occurred after the teen, 17-year-old Collin Griffith, and his mother, 39-year-old Catherine Griffith, were seen having an altercation outside a mobile home in Auburndale, according to Judd.

"There were witnesses outside the mobile home that actually saw Collin drag his mother into the house by the hair on her head," the sheriff said.
Griffith called 911 Sunday evening to report that his mother "fell on a knife" and was bleeding from the neck, Judd said. The teen reportedly said his mother had lunged at him with the knife when she fell on it during a prolonged fight inside the home, according to Judd.

When deputies arrived, the teen met them outside and was "calm, cool, collected – not upset," Judd said. Griffith reportedly told them, "I know my rights, I want an attorney," according to Judd.

During an autopsy conducted on Monday, the medical examiner determined that Catherine Griffith died from a deep knife wound to the neck that was inconsistent with an accidental injury, according to Judd.

Here's more information about his father's death.

According to an affidavit, on Feb. 14, 2023, around 1 p.m., deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office in Oklahoma received a call from Collin saying he had shot his father, Charles Griffith.

Collin stated that there had been an argument between him and his father, Charles. Collin claimed the father allegedly pulled a knife on him and "chased him through the house."

Collin said he had been cornered in the bedroom by the father. Judd said that's when Collin picked up the gun and shot Charles twice, once in the head and once in the chest.

Collin was arrested on charges of first-degree murder of his father, which were later dropped.

Collin was Baker-acted after the incident involving his father and claimed he was going to “kill himself,” after he was released.

A teenager is standing trial on charges he murdered his mother just 18 months after he killed his father, but the defendant says he acted in self-defense both times.

Collin Griffith, 17, is charged with kidnapping and first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his mother, Catherine Griffith on Sept. 8, 2024. Collin claims he acted in self-defense the day his mother died and told 911 dispatchers that his mother “fell on a knife” during a “very long fight.”

Collin was in the custody of his mother, who lives in southwest Florida, at the time of the murder, but had fled to his grandmother’s house in central Florida after an argument over chores. Prosecutors say Catherine went to get her son to bring him home on Sept. 8, and within 30 minutes of her arrival witnesses said they saw Collin dragging her by her hair.
Eighteen months before his mother’s death, Collin was charged with first-degree murder after shooting his father to death in Oklahoma. Prosecutors dropped the charges less than a month later, saying they “could not disprove Collin’s assertion of self-defense.” Prosecutors in Florida have pointed to texts they say show Catherine was threatening to reveal that Collin had not acted in self-defense in that case.

It will be very challenging to maintain self-defense in both cases.

    WTF?

Collin Griffith, 17, was acquitted on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder in the stabbing death of his mother, Catherine Griffith.

Eighteen months before his mother’s death, Collin was charged with first-degree murder after shooting his father to death in Oklahoma.

Prosecutors dropped the charges less than a month later, saying they “could not disprove Collin’s assertion of self-defense.”

Prosecutors in Florida pointed to texts they said showed Catherine was threatening to reveal that Collin had not acted in self-defense in that case.

While the jury heard that Collin shot and killed someone in self-defense, the judge ruled that they could not hear the victim’s name or learn that he was the defendant’s father.

That's not self defense. That's literally planning 1st degree murder to stop her from revealing info.

I am completely floored that he was acquitted. Something tells me this won't be the last time we hear from his murderous self.

Stories like this make me sort of relived that nobody ever wanted to procreate with me.

For everyone's sake I hope some authority is keeping a tracker on him. His way of winning arguments bears watching.
