Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce (19) found unconscious in her dorm at the U.S. Air Force Academy

A 19-year-old United States Air Force Academy cadet was found dead this week in her dormitory room, the academy said.

Cadet 4th Class Avery Koonce was found unconscious in her dorm Wednesday night at the institution, located in Colorado Springs, Colorado, the U.S. Air Force Academy said.

"Academy first responders were called and attempted life-saving measures, which were unsuccessful," the academy said in a post on Facebook Thursday.

Her cause of death is under investigation, the academy said. A spokesperson for the academy said Friday there is no update on the investigation at this time.

Avery was a member of the class of 2028 and was on the academy's women's track and field team.

I think they suspect this was a natural death. Too many official offices releasing statements about it.

Avery Koonce, the 19-year-old U.S. Air Force Academy cadet who was found unresponsive in her room early this month, died of a rare form of sepsis that occurred as her body tried to fight off an upper respiratory tract infection, an autopsy report from the El Paso County coroner’s office shows.

“It’s likely that the bacterial infection was secondary to the parainfluenza infection … that resulted in … symptoms of severe cough and upper airway inflammation and edema,” said the report, which was sent to The Independent on Monday.

Koonce had been suffering from a cough that had “severely worsened” in the days before her death, the report said.

She was found to have pulmonary edema, or an abnormal fluid build-up, and the bacterium Paeniclostridium sordellii in her left lung. The bacterium was also identified in Koonce’s blood

That had to be painful. I wonder if she saw a dr or just thought it would eventually go away.

It was natural. Wow. I wonder if she saw a doctor too.
I know pnemonia can cause sepsis, but didnt know an upper respiratory infection could cause that.

There is a case here on MDS, the original case that brought me here because it's a girl I went to school with, that really reminds me of this one. In that instance strep caused sepsis and she has pneumonia also. She collapsed and died at her home.

Damn, you think you're just fighting a bad cold and staying home and resting is best...then you're dead. It's terrifying.

Think of how many times you have had a bad, persistent cough. It is important to always seek medical attention, as you truly never know what it can lead to.

We all know this is how I am going to go out, because I hate doctors and I am always convinced that 'it will eventually just get better on its own', no matter what it is. Right now it's mastoiditis, who knows what is next.

Yeah, you're not going out like that if I have anything to do with it.

I hate going to the doctor, too. I was super sick when I was like, 20, and just thought I would rest and feel better. But then it got so bad I could barely breathe, and I finally had to go to the ER. Turns out I had pneumonia in both lungs, and was in the hospital for 3 days.

So yeah, I wait until it's so bad I have to go to the ER lol.

RBW Im going to do the surgery on you myself

Nic, Austin was in the hospital with RSV and I stayed with him, and a couple days later felt like shit. Mostly out of breathe, but couldnt sleep. When I was laying down I couldnt breathe at all, and if I did fall asleep, I was jolted awake in 2 minutes. I had double pnemonia, and I suspect I got it from the hospital. I didnt go to the hospital though, just took antibiotics.
That was around December 6th, and family came over for christmas and my SIL complained I didnt have a tree up. Bitch I will never let that go.

@Ang, my SIL would never come over again if she said that to me. If you, or anyone else (preferably BWS because she actually has mad medical skills) wants to come operate on me I would let them at this point.
