Elin Etienne (71) was found decomposing in a closet a week after he went missing from a nursing facility

A family is claiming their grandfather, who had been missing for several days, was found dead inside a closet at a nursing facility in North Miami.

Elin Etienne, 71, was reported missing and last seen Aug. 22. Over a week later, Etienne's family said someone anonymously called them about their grandfather and that nobody at the facility was responding to their requests for answers.

"They said they found him in a closet and he was already decomposing, and they refused to let us see the body," said granddaughter Ruth Keisha Etienne. "And we tried to speak to the nursing home people, but they refused to speak to us. They don’t want to talk to us. I wonder why?"

Last month, the 71-year-old was brought in for rehab after suffering a brain aneurysm.

“He was stuffed in a closet the last 12 days,” said Kimberly Etienne, the victim’s niece. “The officer advised he was so decomposed that they couldn’t recognize him.”

Loved ones say Etienne was a cook, a loving father and grandfather. They said he suffered an aneurysm, which is why they took him to North Dade Nursing and Rehab.

On Aug. 22, he was reported missing.

The family says they eventually received a call from a nurse.

“She told me that they lost him, then they transferred me to another nurse who said he signed a form to leave,” said Rivly Breus, the victim’s niece.

“Do you think he would have signed a form to leave?” asked Local 10′s Janine Stanwood.

“No, he couldn’t even feed himself,” Breus replied. “The fact that he was found in a storage closet next to an aquarium... that’s hurtful.”

What an absolute tragedy. I can't begin to imagine what this poor family is going through. The nursing home never even looked for this man or they would have found him. Rest in peace, Mr. Etienne...

This never should have happened. The trouble is the "nurses" in most of these facilities are not even Registered Nurses (RN), rather they are Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). If they are RNs, they are the bottom of the barrel.

It depends on the facility and the state requirements, where some states have stricter requirements regarding staffing. Overall, my experience is the RNs who work in nursing homes are not always the best. Note that is not saying they all suck, but it is my professional experience they are not.

I have to agree with this in my [admittedly limited] experience with nursing home staff. And yes, most ARE LPNs. Says a lot about how we care for our vulnerable elderly population, doesn't it?

It absolutely does. In some cultures, aging is embraced and celebrated. That is definitely not the case here and it is so very sad.

Both my parents worked with Geriatrics. My mom is a BSN, but never worked at nursing home because of the staff.

So how sealed shut is this storage closet, that they didnt smell the decomp.

Isn't this the SECOND time a person "signed out" of a facility and was dead that we have heard of?

I have so many questions...if he couldnt have "signed out" because he wasnt able to feed himself, how did he get to the storage closet?
