2 killed in Ohio lake in a capsized kayak

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/2-dead-ka...202606506.html

"Two males were kayaking by the beach when one of the kayaks capsized, sending one person to the water, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources told our news partners at WBNS.

The person in the other kayak jumped in to help, but both drowned."

So fucking sad the other guy was trying to help, and died

My nightmare. Don't people wear life vests when they kayak?

KT I thought so, but you are strapped in I believe, so if you turn over you are screwed.

It depends on the kayak. Most recreational kayaks look like this where you are sitting on top and are not strapped in. The really serious professional ones have the part where you put your legs in, but the people that use them know how to flip a kayak and also how to get out of them.

I kayak every summer several times a summer. Always on a sit on top kayak. I’ve never used a sit in one or strap in one. I’ve never kayaked on a lake only rivers and I take a life jacket but I don’t wear it the whole time, I put it on before rapids and bad shoals though. The ones you gotta put your legs down into give me anxiety.

I thought all kayaks had the hole in the middle that you sat in, and yes that gives me anxiety too. I thought the one pictured was considered a row boat. In any event, I'm not going in any of them in open water.

I can’t post pics on mobile but a sit IN kayak has more of a cavern you slide your legs down into, so your legs are covered and not fully exposed. A sit ON top kayak just has a dip you sit in but legs are fully exposed. The photo above is a double kayak sit on top. I’ve never used a double just ones for a single person.
