8-year-old child found dead in vehicle of man killed by police after fatal shooting of woman

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) — A man being pursued in the killing of a woman in New Hampshire was fatally shot by police on a bridge that connects the state to Maine, authorities said Thursday. An 8-year-old child was found shot to death in the man’s car.

The man apparently killed a woman at a home overnight in Troy, New Hampshire, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) away in the western part of the state, and then drove to the bridge, Attorney General John Formella said in a news release.

“Early this morning police engaged with the adult male on the bridge in an incident that ended with the male being fatally shot. The Maine Attorney General’s Office is now investigating that officer-involved shooting incident,” the news release said.

“Police on the bridge also found an 8-year-old child fatally shot” in the man’s vehicle, the news release said. The exact circumstances “remain under active investigation.”

This is so sad. I wonder if the child was killed by the father or by stray bullets from the police? I wasn't able to find any details on this case anywhere, not even the names.
You are talking to a woman who has laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom and chuckled at catastrophe.

I don't know...seems like it is all too early to find out the details. It might be another domestic situation where the man killed the mother of his child, then took off.

I thought this too. Wonder if we will hear if it was police or if they will cover it up. Poor baby.

They haven't released the names, but it was a family.

The man called 911 about 2:07 a.m. to report that he was involved in a fight with his wife and that she was dead. The emergency call was received by York police, and they notified New Hampshire State Police, who found the woman's body around 3 a.m. at an apartment in Troy, New Hampshire, about two hours away from York, Maine.

The man was located by Kittery police by about 2:30 a.m., shortly after the initial call. State officials said his vehicle was found parked on the Piscataqua River Bridge on the southbound side but still in Maine. Public safety officials then closed the bridge to traffic and attempted to secure the area.

State officials said the negotiations, which lasted several hours, were not successful.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, then exited the vehicle and raised a firearm. Before the man could get off a shot, Maine State Trooper Craig Nilson and two New Hampshire State Police troopers responded with deadly force.

Law enforcement then found that an 8-year-old child was fatally shot in the back seat of the man's vehicle, though law enforcement said the child's death was "not associated with the officers' use of deadly force."
