Neighbor arrested in murder of Stephanie & Daniel Menard and their dog Cuddles in Redlands, CA

    https://ktla.com/news/local-news/pol...dog-in-colton/

A friend contacted the Redlands Police Department on Sunday to report Stephanie Menard and her husband Daniel Menard missing.

The Menards were last seen around 10 a.m. Saturday at their home on the 2600 block of Keissel Road.

“Stephanie Menard’s purse was located inside of her residence along with her and Daniel’s cell phones,” the Police Department stated in a post on its Facebook page.

The Menards’ vehicle was found unlocked down the road from their home the same day.

“The Menards’ dog, a small white Shih Tzu named Cuddles, is also missing,” police said.

Daniel Menard suffers from dementia and is diabetic, according to the post.

I wonder how mentally astute the wife is. I think they just wandered off. hopefully.

It almost sounds like they were forced from their home and then transferred to another car. What doesn't make sense is bringing the dog with them. Unless he went missing with the dog and the wife went out to try to find him then somehow encountered an issue? Very strange. Could be a suicide pact maybe?

They went missing from a nudist ranch.

Stephanie and Daniel Menard were last seen Saturday morning leaving their home at the Olive Dell nudist ranch.

Friends say the couple, who is part of a possible lawsuit against the ranch, was being harassed and fear that may have had something to do with their sudden disappearance.

@BWS I was JUST about to come in and mention that they disappeared from a nudist ranch. The story came across my feed during lunch break.

I wonder what the lawsuit was about and why anyone would go to those kind of extremes? The article mentions that she could only walk with a cane. Could the dog have possibly been snatched by a coyote and they went to chase it? The dog thing is bothering me. If they were accosted, the perpetrator wouldn't bother with a dog yet it's missing. Maybe the dog just flat out got out and they went to look for him. IDK, but there's something to that for sure.

In other news, this woman gave zero fucks giving her interview with the media all naked and shit

Fun Fact: My old band used to play a nudist colony in So. Cal every Summer and they were the nicest people. And definitely not the kind of people you want to see naked, but they were a fantastic crowd and we got to be friends with a few of them.

@Boston - I always immediately worry about dogs/cats, etc., whenever someone goes missing. I need to do a little more digging to see if I can figure out what the lawsuit was about.

Oh my with that lady. I wonder if she had a towel on or just didn't care and stood there nude.

I once encountered a bar in Key West a long, long time ago that allowed nudists. It was gross.

It looks like there has been ongoing litigation against Olive Dell Ranch over the years:

It looks like Stephanie opened a case against a Billy Whitt in June 2024 for harassment:

@BWS they need to look in to that guy for sure. Why would someone harass an elderly couple? What kind of asshole does that?

Yep, it showed up in my feed. There's a standoff happening with someone that is a person of interest in their disappearance. It's a resident of the Nudist ranch. I bet it's the dude they filed the complaint against. They're still missing, but police believe that there's foul play and received a tip that this person was involved.

Looks like the couple applied for a restraining order against Whitt. It was denied on 6 June 2024.

“We received a phone call and they did indicate that an individual who was involved in the disappearance of the Menards was on the property,” said Carl Baker from the Redlands Police Department of the tip they received from an unnamed person.

However, nobody was found inside the destroyed residence and investigators have not released any more details on the suspect.

“We are using remote equipment to conduct a search,” Baker explained. “We have not yet located anyone. We don’t know where the subject is. He may still be inside or he may be somewhere else on the grounds.”
This guy must be a known threat to the police, otherwise why are they tearing the house down??? Remote searching is usually done when it would be too dangerous to enter the home manually.

Sounds like they already know who did this. Note the police said they "received a phone call that the individual involved" - not a person of interest, not allegedly involved.

Not much for an update except that they went through the suspect's home that sits right beside where the Menards lived. More at the link:

Baker said police hadn’t found the suspect but believed he was somewhere on the property — either in his home or elsewhere.

A different guy was arrested this morning. The article is kind of confusing, but I think it is for their murders.

Redlands Police Department spokesperson Carl Baker confirmed to KTLA Friday morning that 62-year-old Michael Sparks of Redlands was arrested at the Olive Dell Ranch nudist resort in the 26500 block of Keissel road on Thursday.

Inmate records with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department show Sparks was being held on a murder charge and is not currently eligible for parole.

Okay, this one is a little better.

Police in Redlands, California, have arrested a suspect in their search for a couple who disappeared about a week ago from the city of Colton.

Inmate records with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department show 62-year-old Michael Sparks is being held at West Valley Detention Center.

The record shows Sparks was arrested around 9:45 p.m. Thursday in the 26000 block of Keissel Road and is not currently eligible for parole.

Redlands Police Department spokesperson Carl Baker confirmed Friday to NewsNation affiliate KTLA that Sparks is the suspect in the disappearance of Stephanie and Daniel Menard, who also live in the 26000 block of Keissel Road.

Authorities confirmed Thursday that foul play is suspected in the disappearance.

Some neighbors who know the suspect said they were surprised to hear he was under investigation.

“I don’t really know him a whole lot, but he’s a very soft-spoken guy, said Jim Hynd, a neighbor. “He would probably be the last person that you would think would do something like this.”

I can't find social media yet for Michael Sparks, but this comment was found (cannot figure out how to post it as an image here): https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...0053926&type=3

@BWS I was just coming in here to post the update. How bizarre! They still haven't even found them yet, but that tells me that they might be somewhere in his house or yard. Buried in a basement/crawlspace? You would think in the backyard there would be obvious signs of disturbed earth. I wonder if they had scent dogs that led them to him somehow, but they claim that it was also based on a tip.

The link no longer works that you posted so somebody is doing their due diligence to keep his photo out of the internet.

I haven't looked at the location, but are there areas around it that are not population...somewhere that they could be buried? And, I thought they made an arrest, but it was a different guy than the ones Stephanie had a restraining order on. This is busy Friday at work, or I would dig deeper.

I've looked at the location. You can't get into the "resort" because it's a nudist colony so no Google Street View. But I Goggle-Earthed it, LOTS of places around to bury a body. A lot of open space, desert scrub, etc. Perfect location for a drone search.

@BWS it's the Inland Empire which is mostly desert. There's places to bury the bodies, but with the heat out there right now it wouldn't be an easy task. Especially when you're talking two bodies and a dog. He had to have been determined.

Well, it looks like the Neighbor may have been a serial killer. They're saying that they're still looking for the missing couple and you would think that their remains wouldn't be so decomposed that they couldn't identify them. The way this article reads, there's more than just them buried under his house:

More human remains have been found at the home of 62-year-old Redlands resident Michael Sparks, who was arrested on suspicion of murder last week in connection with an elderly couple reported missing out of Colton.

Investigators with the Redlands Police Department on Sunday were in their fourth day of an extensive search of Sparks’ property at the Olive Dell Ranch Nudist Resort when they recovered the additional remains.

On Aug. 29, after police were tipped off about where the now presumed dead 73-year-old Stephanie Menard and 79-year-old Daniel Menard might be located, authorities attempted to locate Sparks at his home.

The 62-year-old had barricaded himself with a rifle inside, prompting police to use a drone and then a battering ram to tear through the house.

He was located in a cement bunker beneath the residence, the same location where a cadaver dog alerted police to bags stuffed with human remains.

Authorities said Sparks attempted to take his own life moments before he was captured, but the rifle misfired.

The Menards were last seen on Aug. 24 and reported missing the next day by a friend when they didn’t show up for church. Their abandoned vehicle was found about a half mile down from the RV Park.

The Menards and Sparks had been neighbors for years. Other nearby residents told FOX 8’s sister station, KTLA, that the trio had an ongoing feud, and that Sparks never liked the couple.

While authorities have yet to comment on how the alleged killings happened, others, like longtime friend and neighbor Irene Engkraf, have been asking their own questions.

“If [Sparks] drove that car down there, how did he come from there all the way around and up that hill without anybody seeing or knowing who drove that car,” she told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson.

Authorities say they are continuing the work of positively identifying the remains found on Spark’s property as that of the Menards.

It remains unclear if the additional human remains found on the property Sunday may be another victim or victims.
