Luis Aldarondo (37) & Mirko Marweg (58) killed and a third injured in an explosion at a Delta Air Lines facility in Atlanta

    Quick posting on my phone:

ATLANTA (AP) — Two workers were killed and another seriously injured in an explosion Tuesday at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport.

Delta said it was working with local authorities to investigate what happened at the wheel and brake shop.

WSB-TV reported that a tire on a plane exploded. The television station cited unnamed sources.

Several Atlanta fire units and police responded to the maintenance hangar near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport shortly after 5 a.m., The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two team members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility,” Delta said in a statement. “We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”

Very scary. It will be interesting to see how it happened...and learn how it could have been prevented.

We had lunch with a good friend of ours who happens to be a Delta pilot. He was telling us that they were testing the inflation of the tires when one exploded. Those tires are VERY big and strong. When they explode they have been known to take out parts of planes, so a person standing next to it had no chance.

Dang, RBW. Those tires are massive; you don't appreciate how dangerous it can be when they explode. RIP.

@RBW I've been told that overinflating even a car tire can cause an explosion large enough to take people's limbs off so I can't imagine what a tire of that size could do. It must have been a terrible scene

Sad stuff, OSHA (or will it be the NTSB?) will get to the bottom of it but it could just be a freak accident with no preventative cause. Stories like this must hit hard for RBW.

RIP poor Delta employees who were just doing their job...

The body of a worker who died Tuesday in a tire explosion at a Delta Air Lines maintenance facility near the Atlanta airport was unrecognizable, and the family relied on tattoos and a lanyard to identify him, his son told a news outlet.

Mirko Marweg, 58, was among two workers who died while wheel components were being disassembled for maintenance at a wheel and brake shop. A third worker was seriously injured.

A Mississippi State lanyard around his neck helped confirm his identity, Coleman said.

Marweg, who lived in Stone Mountain, Georgia, worked for Delta for more than 20 years and was planning to retire in a few months, according to 11Alive.
The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the second victim as Luis Aldarondo, 37, of Newnan, Georgia.

So the family saw what was left of the body?!? That must have been traumatizing.
