Mother of Flynn Mackrell (18) killed in 2023 high speed crash - wants 16 yr old driver's mother also charged

GROSSE POINTE FARMS, MI — A mother who lost her son in a high-speed crash last year in Grosse Pointe Farms wants the driver's mother charged in connection with his death, according to news reports.

Flynn Mackrell, 18, of Grosse Pointe, was killed after a speeding BMW X3 crashed into a light pole in the area of Ridge and Moran roads around 9 p.m. on Nov. 17, 2023, according to police.

Officers found Mackrell dead while belted into the car's passenger seat, and 16-year-old Kiernan Tague belted in the driver's seat, according to police.

Police said Tague was driving over 100 miles an hour in a 25-mile-an-hour residential area, before losing control of the car and leaving the roadway, striking a utility pole and a tree.

Tague was charged with second-degree murder in connection with the crash. The teen was not charged as an adult, but was "adult designated," meaning a judge has the option of sentencing the teen as a juvenile or an adult, if convicted on the charge.
He was released from jail on bail and is still waiting for a trial date.

Mackrell's mother, Anne Vanker, says Tague's mother should also be held responsible after investigators found text messages showing her warning her son to "Slow the f–k down right now," according to a Detroit Free Press report.

"I have screenshots of you doing 90 mph in the middle of the night when I didn’t even know you," the text messages showed, according to the outlet. "And again two weeks ago going 123 mph just because."

Vanker told Fox 2 Detroit the text messages showed Tague's mother never took the reasonable actions to prevent her child from driving, though she knew how reckless he had been driving.

Based on the recent school shooting case where the parents were tried and found guilty, she might have a shot.

I don't normally support charging parents for a child's crimes, but the Crumbley case and this one are starting to change my viewpoint. This mother knew what her 16yo son was doing in that car and she did nothing about it. All of this technology that enables parents to track their children is useless if the information isn't acted upon. I don't know how anyone survived that crash.

@Kim - right. She clearly knew he was not capable of safe driving, yet she allowed him to drive a car that would allow him to go even faster than before. She might have well handed him a loaded gun.

Exactly! What about her responsibility to protect her own son from himself? Sadly, her poor parenting took someone else's son away.

Why does this always happen in "luxury" cars? Im trying not to judge, but these kids seem entitled.

Is every parent as clueless as this bitch?

You give him access to a vehicle that would do that kind of speed, you obviously didn't make it clear to him that driving is a responsibility and not a right of passage, and you failed to adequately address his behavior on multiple occasions. I hope they lock your bitch ass up right beside your child so you can watch him grow into the total piece of shit you are raising him to be.
Don't like what I have to say? I respect that. Go fuck yourself.

I know, and that is why I do feel she does need to have some culpability in all of this.

It does seem that way. I wonder if the mother is divorced from his father and is overcompensating by allowing him to get away with things. Who knows.

I don't know, maybe because they have more powerful engines and 16yo boys have tiny, underdeveloped brains? When he was seventeen, my son took my 9yo Toyota Corolla up to 110mph on the NJ Turnpike, with three friends in the car. We didn't have apps like Life360 back then; I learned about it the old-fashioned way - by eavesdropping on his conversation. When I confronted him, he rolled his eyes in that infuriating way only a teenager can, and I took his set of keys on the spot. Permanently. No second chances when you're that stupid. He didn't drive again until he was eighteen and bought his own car AND got his own insurance. He thought I was the worst Mom in the world but I have no regrets, he's still alive.

Not all, see above. Some of us don't tolerate stupidity from our "little angels."

Amen to all of this, every word. I'd rep you but that's not working....
