A Southern California judge accused of killing his wife texted his court clerk and bailiff afterward to say he had shot her, prosecutors said Friday as they charged him with murder and sought new bail conditions.

A court filing from prosecutors says Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson texted: ?I just lost it. I just shot my wife. I won?t be in tomorrow. I will be in custody. I?m so sorry.?

Prosecutors also say that 47 weapons and more than 26,000 rounds of ammunition were recovered during a search of his home, including the pistol used in the shooting. Authorities said the weapons were legally owned. A rifle registered in his name is not accounted for, according to the district attorney's office.

Ferguson’s attorneys, Paul Meyer and John Barnett, issued a brief statement and declined to answer questions. “This is a tragedy for the entire Ferguson family. It was an accident and nothing more,” they said.

A Southern California judge charged with killing his wife during an argument while he was drunk pleaded not guilty to murder Tuesday, and his lawyer says it was an “accidental shooting.”

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ricardo Ocampo ordered Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, who appeared in court in a suit and tie, to surrender his passport, submit to searches, and wear monitoring devices for blood alcohol content and GPS as part of new bail conditions sought by prosecutors. Ferguson, who is free on $1 million bail, also is barred from possessing firearms and alcohol and frequenting places such as bars and liquor stores.

After the hearing, Ferguson’s lawyers told reporters the long-time judge and former prosecutor was confident a jury would agree with him that no crime was committed.

An Orange County judge accused of shooting and killing his wife was taken into custody Tuesday after his bond was revoked for allegedly violating the terms of his release while awaiting trial.

Judge Jeffrey Ferguson was accused of drinking alcohol, a violation of the terms of his bail. He has been awaiting trial for the Aug. 2023 shooting of his 65-year-old wife, Sheryl Ferguson, at their Anaheim Hills home. He has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.

Ferguson was handcuffed during a hearing Tuesday after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Eleanor J. Hunter revoked his $1 million bail, and reset his bail amount at $2 million. The case was moved to Los Angeles County due to his job as a judge and his connections to the legal community in Orange County.

Ferguson's attorney said he isn't sure if his client will be able to make that bail.

Ferguson wears two ankle-monitor; one to keep track of his whereabouts and the other to monitor alcohol intake.

He claimed his ankle-monitor was causing him discomfort, and alcohol from hand sanitizer he used to soothe his skin triggered the monitoring system.

An expert on ankle monitors said the bracelet is designed to only indicate alcohol consumption.

A mistrial was declared Monday in the case of an Orange County judge charged with murder in the 2023 shooting of his wife.

Jurors were deadlocked 11-1 in favor of convicting Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, who testified that he accidentally shot and killed his wife, officials said.

Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer said the hung jury was a victory.

“Eleven-to-one for guilty is a phenomenal success,” he told reporters.

“We are absolutely prepared to retry this case,” he said at the news conference.
