They haven't released his name yet. They are saying this is 'swarming' and the girls just met on social media. Is this really a thing???

I've never heard of "swarming" but it's terrifying. I wonder how they picked the man they attacked? Was it random? The article makes it sound like they pre-planned to attack him.

Singing to no one and nowhere to really belong." - Waylon Jennings
I found this in the Urban Dictionary:Seems like "swarming" is usually non violent.an army of people loitering in Mcdonalds or Tim Hortons. a word commonly used in Toronto. The swarm preys on fast food establishments seeking warmth in the winter time.
I really hope this isnt going to be a trend. I feel like teenagers today are a lot more gullible, naive, and stupid than previous generations. Like I was a bad teenager and a bit of a follower, but I would never do anything like this.
My guess, based on a couple of things I have read, is that they were filming it. I hope it's not some crazy challenge. These kids really are dumb if it is.
I think swarming is just a group of people who commit a crime together. This article mentions previous swarming crimes.

Yeah, my understanding of "swarming" is a huge mob of people going in to some place like a convenient store and just stealing everything in sight. There's too many of them to deal with it so the owners are forced to just watch as their place gets looted and destroyed. They were doing it a lot in LA for a while there. Now they're all about taking over freeways and roadways to have drag races or do donuts and shit like that.
If this becomes a "trend", then that's terrifying.
Several stories say they think the girls were trying to steal the alcohol the man had.

Jesus Christ. In the middle of the damn intersection? Wtf.
I was a shitty teenager and we at least went to an abandoned parking lot near the river to do dumb crap like that.
Im getting scared of this generation of teens. Im an elderly Millenial and we are considered the "me" generation, but we this generation literally only cares about themselves and social media.

Toronto homeless man ID'd as victim in alleged fatal 'swarming' attack by 8 girls
Toronto police said Ken Lee, 59, was beaten and stabbed by the group of girls, three who are just 13 years old, in the slaying that sent shockwaves through the city of nearly 3 million people.![]()
This poor man. He was trying to protect a friend and it got him killed by a bunch of psychopaths.
I don't ever want to hear how the homeless are "violent" again. If you bring it to scale, there are FAR MORE killers that have homes than those that are homeless. The homeless become victims of killers far more often than the other way around.

Murder trial for two girls charged in Kenneth Lee swarming death begins today
One of the girls, who the Crown alleges was responsible for stabbing Lee, pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder on Monday morning — her lawyer Boris Bytensky speaking on her behalf — but in a surprise move pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. The Crown, Mary Humphrey, immediately told the court they were rejecting the plea and proceeding to argue for a second-degree murder conviction.
The second girl, standing next to her lawyer, Ayderus Alawi, answered softly “not guilty” when she was arraigned on the charge of second-degree murder.
A judge alone will decide these girls’ fate, rather than a jury. They are two of four girls who will face trial.
The two other girls — one who is also charged with second-degree murder and the other with manslaughter — are scheduled, by their choosing, to have a jury trial in May.
Four other girls previously pleaded guilty and have been sentenced.
