They clearly stole the baby.
Ahhhhh, yes. Christianity coming to save others from themselves again. Because that worked out so well in it's history with colonization and other atrocities.and praised it as an act of Christian faith to save her.
This screams "White Savior" complex and is even more gross because of the fact that it was American Marines that killed her parents. Now they've stolen her. Nice.
This case is such bullshit!

US Marine’s adoption of Afghan war orphan voided
In a highly unusual ruling, a state court judge on Thursday voided a U.S. Marine’s adoption of an Afghan war orphan, more than a year after he took the little girl away from the Afghan couple raising her. But her future remains uncertain.
For now, the child will stay with Marine Maj. Joshua Mast and his wife, Stephanie, under a temporary custody order they obtained before the adoption. The Masts will have to re-prove to the court that they should be granted a permanent adoption.
Despite the uncertainty, the ruling was a welcome move for the Afghan couple, who had been identified by the Afghan government as the child’s relatives in February 2020 and raised her for 18 months.
Jesus, Charlottesville is 2 hours from me. I must be living under a rock as this is the first I've heard of it. Dude's a total dick

Government says Marine’s adoption of Afghan orphan seen as abduction, must be undone
The U.S. government has warned a Virginia judge that allowing an American Marine to keep an Afghan war orphan risks violating international law and could be viewed around the world as “endorsing an act of international child abduction,” according to secret court records reviewed by The Associated Press.
It is rare for the federal government to step into a local custody case, but concern about the child’s fate has stretched across the Trump and Biden administrations. The Justice Department argued in the court documents that the dispute has ramifications that extend far beyond the rural courthouse where the girl’s future is being decided.
Failing to return the child, now 4, to Afghan relatives in the U.S. could jeopardize American efforts to resettle Afghan refugees, threaten international security pacts and might be used as propaganda by Islamic extremists — potentially endangering U.S soldiers overseas, Justice Department attorneys and other U.S. officials warned in court filings seeking to intervene in the case.
The Justice Department was particularly scathing in its assessment of how Marine Maj. Joshua Mast and his wife convinced a Virginia judge to sign off on the adoption of the girl, who has been in their custody since 2021.
I'm glad that they're speaking up about it. This is going to be just like that other case (forgot the name of the child) where it drags on to the point where the child will be hurt by not understanding why they are being taken out of the only home they knew. It's abuse to keep this child away from their family.
