Husband of slain ex-Kansas soccer player: God told me to kill her

Regan Gibbs-Marek, a former soccer player at the University of Kansas, was found dead in her apartment on Monday, and her husband has been charged with the murder.

Gibbs-Marek, 25, married Chad Marek, 26, last fall.

Fox 4 in Kansas City reports that Marek called 911 and confessed to killing his wife.

"He told us that God told him to do it," Lawrence Police Chief Rich Lockhart told the outlet.

Police are investigating Marek?s mental health.

"There obviously are some preliminary indicators that this person wasn't mentally stable. We call it being in psychosis, so obviously that is something we will be investigating as well as this case continues," Lockhart said.

Jayhawks soccer coach Mark Francis and athletics director Travis Goff both offered condolences.

"Our soccer program is heartbroken to hear about the tragic loss of Regan," Francis said in a statement. "She was a tremendous teammate and young woman, and touched so many during her time at Kansas. Regan will always be remembered for the impact she had both on and off the field. We share our condolences to her family, friends and teammates during this difficult time."

I'm not trying to victim blame, but this girl married him recently. So I am guessing she was a Jesus freak too. I am guessing schizophrenia with his age. The problem is, that since she was aware he was a Jesus freak she probably didn't recognize that there was something else going on until it was too late. I don't understand the Jesus freak thing, but I REALLY don't understand women getting involved with it. It's nothing but a lose-lose proposition for women!

Marek has spent the last six months in the custody of Larned State Security Hospital in an attempt to restore his competency for trial. Judge Stacey Donovan declared him unfit for trial soon after his arrest, and he waited about 18 months for a bed at the state hospital, as the Journal-World reported. Marek was ordered to spend 90 days at the hospital, but hospital staff recommended another 90 days in January.

On Tuesday, Donovan issued an order that “proceedings for the involuntary commitment of the defendant be commenced” after she received a report from Larned that said Marek is “unlikely to become competent in the foreseeable future.”

How did she not see how unstable he was? You cant hide mental illness like that.
