Weird indeed. My money would be on murder-suicide, or murder and hiding out. But there have been cases like the one where they found the woman being held hostage and her companion buried in the yard.

Either he killed her or she killed him or they're together somewhere. There's no way they both go missing on the same day and it's not connected somehow.

Well that's really weird.But we learned Wednesday night that his family says his wallet and phone were found next to his girlfriend's body.

Very weird, indeed. So, the girlfriend quit her job the same day she went missing and also took a LOA from school. She might have been going through a mental health crisis and possibly (dare I say) did something to him then killed herself.
This makes the most sense to me.

A body recovered last week along Lake Michigan in suburban Wilmette has been identified as a missing University of Illinois Chicago graduate student who was last seen in late April, according to a social media post by family.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the body of Daniel Sotelo, 26, was found Sunday, May 22. The cause and manner of death are both pending, according to officials.
Sotelo and his girlfriend, Natally Brookson, 22, a UIC student, were both last seen on April 30. Brookson's body was pulled from Lake Michigan May 2, according to police, who said her death was under investigation.
The cause and manner of her death haven't been determined.

The water was freezing cold (still is) when they went in. I would surmise they went into shock rather quickly.
This is so sad. I'm glad that their family has closure.
