Investigation into death of Cairns woman and loyal volunteer Toyah Cordingley, 24

    October 22, 2018 2:39pm

YOUNG animal lover Toyah Cordingley is being remembered as ?the most beautiful, loving soul? as police launch a murder investigation into the 24-year-old?s death.

Ms Cordingley?s body was found at Wangetti Beach this morning after worried family and friends took to social media yesterday in an attempt to find her.

She disappeared after taking her dog, which was later found unharmed, for a walk on Sunday afternoon.

Port Douglas Councillor Michael Kerr employed Ms Cordingley at his animal shelter Paws and Claws for more than a year and said he was devastated to hear news of her death.

Toyah Cordingley was found dead at Wangetti Beach today. Police have launched a murder investigation into her death.

?She was the most beautiful, loving soul. I knew her and her housemate when she was working for me,? Cr Kerr said.

?I was querying the details (of her disappearance) on Facebook before sharing (the post).

?She was an absolutely loyal employee of Paws and Claws. She was one of the most beautiful souls. It?s tragic.

?She adored animals, she was on a different level with animals, than humans. She had something special with animals. Even the troubled dogs would calm down in her presence.?

Cr Kerr also expressed shock at a murder happening in the quiet, beachside suburb.

?You wouldn?t think of anything like that happening in Wangetti,? he said.

?There are a lot of a******* in the world, but when something like this happens to someone who is one of the most purest, beautiful people, it?s awful.?

Detective Senior Sergeant Ed Kinbacher said Ms Cordingley drove to the beach between 2pm and 2.30pm yesterday to walk her dog.

He said anyone who saw anything suspicious yesterday or this morning should contact police.

?She was 800m north of the southern access point, and there are only two access points at Wangetti,? he said.

?She was between the foreshore and the start of bushland.

?This is not a highly frequented area. People notice each other at Wangetti Beach.?

He said any information would help the case.

?No young woman should go to the beach to walk their dog and have this happen to them,? he said.

Ms Cordingley was known for her work with Paws and Claws and was with her dog at the beach shortly before she died. Police are investigating her murder.
?It?s a quiet beach. I?m not aware of any historical problems with this area.

?Anyone who has had any concerns about people they?ve seen on the beach in recent months, please come forward.?

Anyone with information to report should call Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Wangetti Beach is about 38km north of Cairns, halfway between Port Douglas and Palm Cove.

There are locals saying her dog was found unharmed, tied to a tree. That's unconfirmed at this stage though. Doesn't necessarily mean her killer was familiar with the dog, they might've made Toyah tie him up herself

This is the police conference. They probably could've done without the female journo cracking jokes at the start seeing as it's probably a murder investigation

Edit nvm, I think the dog info is the press conference (which I haven't finished watching), in which case it is confirmed

Thanx peace. I realised after posting that I've got a few mutuals with her, wasn't expecting that

This never happened the first few years I was on mds, now it happens 2-3 times a year - & it's not like I have a massive FB friends list or anything.

Cairns murder investigation: police widen hunt for killer after body found on beach

Detectives extend search for evidence north to Port Douglas and south to Cairns after Toyah Cordingley?s body found

    Tue 23 Oct 2018 08.56 BST

Police have broadened their hunt for clues in the death of a young Cairns woman whose body was found on a deserted north Queensland beach after she went missing while walking her dog.

Toyah Cordingley?s body was found in dunes at Wangetti Beach, 40km north of Cairns, on Monday. The 24-year-old animal lover was reported missing by her family after she failed to return from an afternoon walk on Sunday.

Homicide detectives are treating her death as suspicious and potentially a sexually related murder.

Investigators have now extended their search for evidence beyond the isolated beach north to Port Douglas and south to Cairns.

Detective Inspector Sonia Smith said officers were looking into Cordingley?s visit to Rusty?s Markets on Sheridan Street in Cairns on Sunday before she went to the beach.

?If anybody has spoken to her at that location, please come forward,? she told reporters on Tuesday.

?We have already made a number of inquires with family, friends and colleagues but if we haven?t spoken to you yet we would ask you to make contact with us.?

Smith appealed for dashcam footage from drivers who travelled between Smithfield and Port Douglas on Sunday between 12pm and 7pm using the Captain Cook Highway.

She said detectives were particularly interested in obtaining footage from the northern and southern car park areas of Wangetti beach.

Police divers are also searching waters near where the body was found for Cordingley?s personal possessions, she said.

The pharmacy worker?s body and dog were discovered on Monday morning by SES volunteers 800m north of her car, which was parked in a camping ground car park.

The community has been mourning the young woman?s death. Friends and strangers have posted messages of grief and outrage on her Facebook page.

Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

So a guy who knew Toyah is quoted in this article

    https://www.news.com.au/national/que...CO3ytvSj_rXMX8

On his FB he's referenced someone who has apparently been posting shit all over her page & upsetting her family. & by referenced I mean he sounds like wants to beat the shit out of him.

Her friend's seem to think it's a fake profile posting all the shit & one of the girls says she thinks the same profile was sending her sexually harrassing messages. She could be mistaken, but if she's not, with it being such a small population up there, I guess there's a chance the sock puppet is a creep who's actually in their real life social group

This idiot posting in the Cairns Neighbourhood Watch group might be the same guy under another sock puppet acct because I don't ever remember seeing sexually-focused idiots inserting themselves into an Australian case so quickly

The mother of murdered Cairns woman Toyah Cordingley says life will never be the same again, as police reveal a search of Lake Placid and Caravonica west of Cairns in far north Queensland has led to the discovery of items of interest.

    Key points:

Police have found items of interest to their investigation but won't provide details

Investigators want to speak to any women harassed by men in the area during the past two years

It's hoped someone will come forward with critical information after Ms Cordingley's mother spoke

The 24-year-old pharmacy worker was walking her dog on Wangetti Beach, north of Cairns when she was attacked on October 21.

Vanessa Gardiner described how she and her family searched Wangetti Beach for her daughter, saying it was Toyah's father who eventually found her body the day after she disappeared.

Ms Gardiner said she has had many sleepless nights.

"It's an emotional rollercoaster of grief, hate, anger, and nothingness feeling hollow, guilt, not knowing how to feel," she said.

"To have her stolen from us in such a manner breaks our hearts in ways you can't even imagine.

"Christmas this year will be unbelievably hard without Toyah as she will never open the presents I already have for her.

"You can help our broken family by bringing hope and justice for Toyah's senseless death.

"Life for us will never ever be the same."

Ms Gardiner described what had happened to her family as "the nightmare".

She described how when Toyah went missing the family searched Wangetti Beach in the darkness with "little torches" until first light.

VIDEO at link: Toyah Cordingley's mother talks about the 'nightmare' of losing her daughter (ABC News)
"We kept searching till my phone battery went flat," she said.

The family found Toyah's dog and Ms Gardiner said they returned home.

She said it wasn't until Toyah's father Troy took police to where the dog was found that he discovered her body.

Ms Gardiner said Toyah's father had to be carried from the scene.

"The disbelief of everything started, and we spent the rest of our day with police at two stations in a state of shock.

"The scale of what was happening was unbelievable. SES divers and police were everywhere it was surreal and we could see the main crime scene where our Toyah was."

Queensland police said they have expanded their investigation further south of the beach where Toyah's body was found.

Detective Inspector Sonia Smith said items relevant to the investigation were found during a search of the Lake Placid and Caravonica areas, west of Cairns, over the weekend.

"We found a number of items. I am not able to go into those exact [details of those] items but they will form part of our investigation," she said.

"We've identified a number of areas of interest, which led to searches by the State Emergency Service and Queensland police divers.

"Particularly on Sunday we saw over 50 State of Emergency Service members attend and assist with a police search of the Lake Placid and Caravonica areas."

Detective Inspector Smith said Queensland police said they hoped the statement by Toyah's mother would help them find the killer.

"We hope that it will trigger someone's memory and encourage people to call Crime Stoppers to provide more information," she said.

Police also asked for women to come forward if they had seen men behaving inappropriately on beach areas between to primary locations ? the northern beaches of Cairns and the coastal town of Cardwell, situated more than 200 kilometres south of where Toyah's body was found.

"Any female that's been approached by any male acting aggressively, inappropriately or making them feel uncomfortable in the past two years," she said.

"We've already had a number of calls to Crime Stoppers from females in relation to males causing them concern on our beaches."

Toyah Cordingley murder 'key suspect' reports could jeopardise investigation, police say
    Updated 47 minutes ago

Queensland police have criticised media reports that a key suspect in the murder of Cairns woman Toyah Cordingley has fled the country.

    Key points:

Police say speculation about the Toyah Cordingley investigation is "not helpful"

Reports came from the Sunday Mail and Seven News

Ms Cordingley's stepfather criticised the media over publishing information before the family can be told

Ms Cordingley, 24, was found dead on Wangetti Beach in far north Queensland in October.

The Sunday Mail and Seven News have reported that a male nurse who was working at a far north Queensland hospital and had been identified as a "key suspect" had fled to India shortly after Ms Cordingley was murdered.

The Queensland Police Service released a brief statement on Sunday saying the report could jeopardise the homicide investigation still underway.

"Speculation surrounding elements of the investigation are not helpful, and have the potential to jeopardise that," the statement said.

"Queensland Police Service will not be providing anything further, other than the investigation is continuing."

Family 'pissed off', says they weren't informed

In its report on Saturday night, Seven News said "potential forensic evidence" linked the Indian man to the murder scene at Wangetti Beach.

"Seven News learnt of this breakthrough about two weeks ago but we chose not to report it out of respect for Toyah's family and for the ongoing police investigation," reporter Sarah Greenhalgh said.

"Late this afternoon, detectives informed Toyah's parents of these developments."

But Ms Cordingley's stepfather Darren Gardiner criticised the media reports in a social media post on Sunday, saying the family had not been told.

"Every single development in this investigation QPS have come to visit us and give us the best update they can before the information goes to media so we can be prepared," he said.

"I'm totally pissed off with how the media has conducted themselves with regards to current information and no regard for our family."

Detectives have said they believed Ms Cordingley was attacked while walking her dog on the beach on October 21.

Locals scoured the area where Ms Cordingley was found searching for clues, and days later formed a human chain and cast flowers into the ocean to "reclaim the beach".

Women who attended a Reclaim the Night rally in Cairns days after Ms Cordingley's death said the crime had hit home.

The jury in the murder trial of a man accused of stabbing a woman at least 26 times has been discharged, paving the way for a retrial.

Organic food store worker Toyah Cordingley, 24, was found dead on the remote Wangetti Beach in Queensland on 22 October 2018.
Rajwinder Singh, 40, a former hospital nurse at nearby Innisfail, fled to India hours after Cordingley’s body was found, leaving behind his wife and three children. He was arrested by police in Delhi and extradited to Australia in 2023.

The jurors in the Supreme Court in Cairns were unable to reach a unanimous decision in deliberations that began on Friday and continued until Monday.
At the time of Cordingley’s murder, he was living in Innisfail, two hours away from where her body was located.

There were no eyewitnesses to Cordingley’s death or the subsequent hiding of the body even though several people visited the 4km beach the day she was killed.

The three-week trial saw many of those people tell the court they saw a suspicious man staring at them, but did not actually witness the murder.

The prosecution produced cellphone data suggesting the victim’s phone moved in the same direction as Mr Singh’s blue Alfa Romeo sedan on the day she went missing.

The court was also told that a DNA sample taken from a stick in the victim’s shallow grave was likely a match for Mr Singh. In addition, Mr Singh’s hurried escape to India was presented as evidence in the trial.
