They were public defenders, appointed to represent him. From what I can tell, this all stems from crime scene photos, which were leaked to the public. They were going to be removed from the case by the judge, but went ahead and withdrew before it came to that.

He does not have funds for private counsel, so he will be assigned new public defenders.

A longtime defense attorney filed a motion on behalf of Richard Allen's own defense attorney on Thursday, arguing he should be allowed to remain counsel to the Delphi murders suspect in a new document submitted just hours before a scheduled status hearing in Fort Wayne on Thursday.

Public defenders Andrew Baldwin and Bradley Rozzi are tasked with defending Allen against the charges he faces in the 2017 murders of Abigail Williams, 13, and Liberty German, 14.

The filing comes two days after Indiana State Police investigated a leak of sensitive evidence and documents related to the case that allegedly became public at the hands of an employee on Baldwin's team.

"Attorney Baldwin did nothing wrong. He was snookered and abused," defense lawyer David Hennessy argued in the filing.

Hennessy, a longtime defense attorney who has argued on behalf of lawyers throughout Indiana before, argued that a trusted friend to Baldwin was given access to the office space where he kept all Delphi-related items.

"He was betrayed," Hennessy wrote, arguing that Baldwin has since kept "all Delphi-related items locked in a room or a locked fireproof cabinet."

Defense counsel for Allen has reportedly put together a plan for action which stipulates no item related to Delphi will be left unattended for even any second in any unlocked room, the filing claimed.

Theory that teens were killed in white nationalist sacrifice is 'fanciful,' prosecutors say
Not entirely fanciful... take 764 for example. Global neo-nazi satanic cult preying on minors lured over social media for violent gore and other grody videos? Sounds crazy but it's true.

    This.

Also, the fact that they're trying to get the attorneys off the case that are presenting the possibility of cult involvement is suspect to me. Especially when it's being rumored that LE is possibly involved.

IMHO, LE are tied up in this somehow and they found their sacrificial lamb to take the fall for it. They don't want some public defenders getting him off. The case has been grossly mismanaged from the beginning and now they're trying to throw his attorneys out?

Some sneaky shit is going on here. Mark my words.

    ETA: Since it's a double.

I DO know this case really well. I remember one of the first reports to come out about the crime scene was that it looked cult like or ritualistic. So this isn't some new info.

I used to think the cops were screwing the pooch on this case due to ineptitude. Now I'm thinking it's on purpose to cover for one (or some) of their own.

Richard Allen's lawyers won't be able to present their ritual sacrifice theory to jury at Delphi murders trial

For the second time in as many weeks, special Judge Frances Gull has issued a ruling against defendant Richard Allen that will have a significant impact on the upcoming Delphi murders trial.

Wednesday morning, Gull granted a motion to block Allen’s defense team from introducing key evidence in his defense — prohibiting his attorneys from telling a jury about their theory that other men — not Allen — committed the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in a ritualistic sacrifice near Delphi’s Monon High Bridge in 2017.

In response to evidence and testimony presented at that hearing, the judge issued her order Wednesday, stating the defense failed to produce admissible evidence demonstrating a clear link between Odinism, the alternate perpetrators and the murders.

“The Court will not permit the evidence submitted by the defense in support of their arguments regarding third-party perpetrators in the trial of this cause as the probative value of such evidence is greatly outweighed by confusion of the issues and its potential to mislead the jury,” Gull wrote in her order.
If he's convicted, I think this sets it up for the conviction to be overturned. I'm not really sure how they can prohibit him from saying it was someone else.

I see this as problematic for exactly what you shared, RBW. If he is convicted, his defense can claim it was because he was denied the ability to present evidence. The theory they want to present is stupid though, so there is that.

Exactly. This is not a case I have ever really followed, and I have no real feeling one way or another on his innocence or guilt, but I find it odd how limiting they are being on what they are allowing him to argue. I have heard some crazy defense theories argued over the years, so not sure why they are saying he can't put it out there. They might be able to limit certain portions, but to not be able to say someone else did it seems like too much.

I have followed it a bit. He confessed multiple times to his family (wife, I believe) and others (maybe fellow inmates...not sure). Everyone deserves a fair trial, but the theory itself is far-reaching; however, it is still his right to have a defense present evidence (if there is any) that might challenge he is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Not getting a warm fuzzy about this case. Nothing is adding up. At first I thought maybe I was just being overly critical of LE, but the more I read, the more alarms went off.

Lawyer Lee did a really interesting video on Allen's appeal and current living conditions:

There are very strict rules placed by the judge to the jury.

They will work Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

The court will provide jurors with breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as transportation to and from court.

One juror asked during the selection process if he could attend church on Sunday. Gull said he could with court supervision.

These 16 people from Allen County surrendered their phones, tablets, and laptops to bailiffs Thursday morning when they showed up to be sworn in at Fort Wayne. They then were bused to wherever they will call home during the four-week trial.
They will not have unsupervised television time, but they might have viewing rooms for those interested in the Major League Baseball playoffs and World Series, Gull said. There will be movies ― Gull suggested most likely romantic comedies, but certainly not crime movies.

"Under the supervision of the bailiffs, they may talk to their families," Gull said.

The jurors will have access to their phones to call home to speak with family and children, then the phone is confiscated until the next evening.

Jurors in the trial of the Delphi murders heard prison phone calls on Thursday in which suspect Richard Allen allegedly confessed to his wife, saying, "I did it."

In the recorded calls, Allen expressed guilt, even asking his wife if she would still love him if he were guilty, referencing the possibility of facing the electric chair. His wife, however, pushed back, suggesting that he was being manipulated.

Allen’s calls to his mother followed a similar pattern, with him admitting guilt as his family voiced concerns about his mental state.

The defense argues that Allen’s confessions were not freely given but were a reaction to the psychological toll of solitary confinement.

Prosecutors allege that Allen has confessed to the murders over 60 times since his arrest.

Richard Allen was seriously mentally ill while at Westville prison, IDOC psychologist says

Dr. Deanna Dwenger, executive director of Mental Health Services for the Indiana Department of Correction, testified Friday that Allen arrived at Westville Correctional Facility with depression and anxiety disorder. By April 2023, around the time Allen began confessing to killing Abby and Libby, he was seriously mentally ill, Dwenger told jurors.

Dwenger, the fourth defense witness to take the stand, also said that prolonged isolation and segregation aggravated Allen's mental condition. Allen was kept in solitary confinement for a little over a year at Westville, where his attorneys said he was fed through a door slip. The lights in his small cell were never turned off, and he was constantly monitored via a camera.

Allen was taken to Westville in November 2022, about a month after he was arrested. By spring of 2023, he told family members that he'd found God and began confessing to the crimes in several phone calls to his wife and mother. Allen also confessed to prison guards who were assigned to monitor him while he's on suicide watch and to keep a time-stamped log of his behavior. Coinciding with his confessions was a series of bizarre behaviors, such as flushing a Bible in the toilet and eating his own feces.

The fate of Richard Allen is now in the hands of five men and seven women, who began deliberations early Thursday afternoon.

Carroll County Prosecutor Nicholas McLeland, in his closing argument Thursday morning, said that to find out who killed Abby and Libby, investigators had to find out the identity of "Bridge Guy."

"The State has shown that Richard Allen is Bridge Guy," McLeland told jurors, adding later: "Five years, he lives in the city. Five years, he lives amongst us."

Not surprisingly, he has been found guilty of all charges.

Richard Allen has been found guilty on all four counts for the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German.

The jury deliberated for approximately 19-20 hours over several days, reaching the verdict Monday afternoon.

Before sentencing was read, Special Judge Frances Gull said, "Regardless of what the verdict is, people aren't going to be happy."
The prosecution embraced as the verdict was read. Allen's lawyers were comforting him, before he was cuffed and led away.

During discussion of sentencing, Allen looked at his wife, Kathy, and asked, "Are you OK?"

Outside the courtroom, the news that Allen was found guilty was greeted by cheers from the assembled crowd.

Kathy Allen, Richard's wife, told 13 News "this isn't over at all" as she left the courtroom.
