Timmy Ray Vernon, 22, of King, has been missing in a remote area of West Virginia since Aug. 9.
Last week West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Police Lt. W. W. Brogan said Vernon had been camping in an area called Trout Run near Waiteville, W. Va.
?He last seen around 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9,? said Brogan. ?He called 911 on Sunday and advised them that he was lost.?
On Tuesday, West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Police Captain Larry Case said the case was still open but, after over a week of extensive searches there are currently no active searches being conducted.
?The last concerted effort was on Saturday,? he said, adding that effort included DNR personnel as well as a number of local search and rescue teams. ?We have basically run out of places to look. That area has been very well covered.?
Vernon?s grandmother, Butterfly Suneagle, said Vernon had gone to the area with several friends to hang out and think.
Brogan said multiple fire departments and police agencies from both West Virginia and Virginia as well as the national guard had been searching for Vernon since Aug. 10.
?We had a very rainy weekend,? he said. ?The temperatures during the first few days got down into the upper 50s at night. Our concern is if he does not have any cover with all the wet weather we have been having.?
?It down-poured every day we were up there,? said Suneagle, who, along with other member?s of the family, was at the search site for most of the week. She said the wet weather had prevented helicopters from being used until Wednesday. ?When they got a chopper up they did not sense any body heat at all.?
Case confirmed that a national guard helicopter had performed a heat search of the area with no positive results. He said officials in the area have not given up, but are waiting in the hopes that some new information may be uncovered that can spur future searches.
?We have looked and looked and covered the area pretty thoroughly,? said Case. ?We are kind of in a wait and see mode. We will be monitoring his cell phone for nay activity and will probably get some more chopper activity in the near future.?
But he noted that the area where Vernon is missing is very large.
?We are talking about a really big area,? he said. ?It is heavily forested and really rough country. It would be hard to search every area.
?It has really gotten to all of our guys,? he added. ?We want him to show up safe.?
?We are holding up as good as possible,? Suneagle said. ?We are waiting and waiting is the hardest part.?
Suneagle said Vernon was the father of two children, a one-year-old and a five-month-old baby.
Vernon is 5-feet 6-inches tall and weighs 135 pounds. The has blue eyes and was wearing blue jeans, a greenish/turquoise t-shirt, a hat and boots. Anyone with information on Vernon?s location is asked to call 540-897-5200 or Monroe County 911.
