Funeral arrangements have been made for a baby who police believe was killed Tuesday by his father who then took his own life a day later.
Aidyn Michael Burton, 10 months, is set to be memorialized during a service Sunday at Jones Funeral Home.
Burton was pronounced dead on arrival at Onslow Memorial Hospital. Police said he had an object in his throat, blocking his windpipe.
The childs father, Marine Cpl. Rodney Burton, 22, was found dead Thursday in his pickup truck outside a house on Camelia Road in Trent Woods, a small town outside New Bern, where his girlfriend lived. He died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
He had become the main suspect in his child's death, which police classified as a homicide.
Police said the father did not live at the Banks Street home with the child.
The child is survived by his mother, Amber Hewitt, of the home; grandparents, aunts and an uncle, according to information from Jones Funeral Home.
We want to extend our deepest sympathy to the mother and family of the child as well as the family of Cpl. Burton during this challenging time, said Capt. Binford Strickland, the public affairs officer for II Marine Expeditionary Force to which Burton was assigned. Again, our deepest condolences and heartfelt thoughts go to the families involved in this incident.
The Kettle Diner, located on S. Marine Boulevard, is taking donations for the baby's funeral.
Electronic condolences may be left for the family at jonesfh.org. In lieu of flowers please send memorials to PNC Bank, c/o Aidyn Michael Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 188, Richlands, NC 28574
