"It has been almost five years since Ryan Jacob Esparza, 17 years old at the time, disappeared.
In the afternoon of June 14, 2007, Ryan went to play basketball with a friend at Highlands Park off West Southmore Avenue near Richie Street in Pasadena.
He never came home.
Ryan?s mother, Gloria Esparza, said his friend told police that Ryan walked away from the basketball court when he received a phone call, and he never saw him again.
Texas Equusearch searched the area around the park in a 5-mile radius and the Pasadena police investigated.
Pasadena police spokesman Vance Mitchell said the department is no longer actively investigating, although it is still an open case.
?If some new evidence came up we would. But at this point we?re at a loose end,? Mitchell said. ?We don?t have any way of taking any additional steps on it.?
Missing Children?s Day
This Friday, May 25, is National Missing Children?s Day, and Gloria Esparza, who now lives in Austin, has made sure to bring up her son?s case every year since his disappearance.
?I?m just trying to remind the public we?re still looking for Ryan,? she said.
This year, the Laura Recovery Center has again partnered with Crime Stoppers and Clear Channel to run images and information on missing children on digital Clear Channel billboards throughout the week leading up to National Missing Children?s Day.
Eight different kids are featured on digital billboards throughout the Houston area, said Dawn Davis, senior case manager at the Laura Recovery Center. Seven of them have gone missing in Texas and one in California.
The images rotate throughout the day along with paid advertising, showing each image for 8 seconds at a time.
Four boards in Pasadena
In Pasadena, there are four digital billboards that all feature missing children, including Ryan Esparza, who is now 22. There are two on State Highway 225 (one near Red Bluff Road facing west, the other near Spooner facing east) and one double-sided sign on Beltway 8 near Pasadena Boulevard.
The images advertise National Missing Children?s Day and show the website for the Laura Recovery Center.
Ryan Esparza, who went to Pasadena High School before he went missing, is about 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. When he was last seen he was wearing a white T-shirt; red, white and blue plaid shorts; and white Jordan sneakers.
On a mission
Gloria Esparza said not a day has gone by that she didn?t think about Ryan and that she is on a mission to get her son back.
?Five years is way too long,? she said.
Esparza said she doesn?t want closure but answers. She knows there?s a possibility she might never see her son again, but she keeps up her hope that one day Ryan will reunite with his family.
He would then meet his son, 4-year-old Ryan Jacob Jr., who was born three months after his dad disappeared.
?Somebody knows what happened and where he?s at,? Gloria Esparza said. ?I just need the public to start talking about it again.?
Anyone with information on the disappearance of Ryan Esparza is asked to call the Pasadena Police Department at 713-477-1221, or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS. Tipsters can remain anonymous."
