Ryan Borgwardt (45), once missing, is presumed to have faked his own death - suspected of traveling to Uzbekistan

Officials in Wisconsin believe a man who disappeared after he was kayaking is alive and well, possibly having faked his death and traveled to Europe — after he took out a life insurance policy and communicated with a woman from Uzbekistan.

Ryan Borgwardt — a married father of two — went missing on Aug. 12, and his last known location was Green Lake

Deputies found a capsized kayak in the lake and Borgwardt's vehicle and trailer parked in Dodge Memorial County Park.

On Aug. 24, three cadaver dogs and a dive team were brought in to assist with the search. An almost eight-week extensive search produced no findings.
The investigation shifted focus across the Atlantic when it was discovered that Borgwardt’s passport was “run” on Aug. 13, the day after he disappeared.

Investigators found the Watertown man obtained a second passport, cleared his hard drives and changed his banking information the day he disappeared, saying he'd been in contact with a woman in Uzbekistan.

Borgwardt also is also alleged to have taken photos of his passport, moved funds to a foreign bank and changed his email address.

The sheriff's office will pursue compensation for search efforts funded by taxpayers.

But why fake his own death? Did he owe a bunch of money? Got in trouble with the law?

I don't understand the life insurance policy, he can't use that money for himself...?

He is back in the US and has been arrested.

The kayaker who faked his death and fled the country is back on U.S. soil and in police custody.

Online records on Tuesday night showed Ryan Borgwardt, 45, in custody at Green Lake County Jail.

The Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office has scheduled a press conference for 10 a.m. Wednesday to update the case.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Dec. 11, Green Lake County Sheriff Mark Podoll gave an update on how Borghardt ended up in custody.

Though Podoll offered few details about Borgwardt's surprising return, he said the father has "cooperated with us."

"He got on an airplane and landed in the United States," Podoll said, adding that he came "willingly."

Podoll would not answer reporters' questions about whether Borgwardt has been in contact with his wife and kids.
"That I can't release," he said.

He did say the department spoke to the family, adding, "I can only imagine how they feel."

As for what compelled him to turn himself in, Podoll said, "His family, I guess."

He said the Green Lake County District Attorney will announce charges.

I wonder if the new girlfriend was a scam or something, and he was like, "well, guess I have to go back now..."
