A severed thumb found in the street by a member of the public is that of a missing man, police said today.
Forensic tests showed that the body part, found in Ilford, north-east London, belonged to Mahmood Ahmad, who was reported missing on March 7.
A kidnap investigation is under way but police said they are not ruling out the possibility of murder.
The 41-year-old, from Watford, was last seen by colleagues leaving the kebab house where he worked in Aldgate, London, in the early hours of the same day.
Detective Chief Inspector Melanie Burn, of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire major crime unit, said: 'We are urgently appealing for any information on Mahmood's whereabouts.
'He may well be injured and need urgent medical help.'
Mohammed Riaz, 33, of no fixed abode, has been charged with kidnap, false imprisonment, harassment and dwelling burglary in connection with the incident.
He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court on May 24.
Three other men and one woman are under arrest and being questioned by detectives.
