A body wrapped in carpet has been discovered buried in the back garden of a dying former friend of Reggie Kray.
Roy Heath, 52, was arrested yesterday after the remains - said to be up to 20 years old - were dug up at his home in Fulham, west London.
Officers swooped on the address following a tip-off.
Heath is suffering from terminal cancer and has just weeks to live. He was questioned under caution at a hospice in Lambeth, south London, before being bailed.
The 52-year-old met Kray in jail and is believed to have carried out work for the former gangland boss, the Sun newspaper reported.
A team of officers, accompanied by a forensic archaeologist, have been excavating Heath's garden for more than two days.
A pathologist was called in shortly after midday today when a digging team came across a rolled up carpet.
Work was halted while forensic officers examined the scene and took away soil samples surrounding the makeshift grave.
Detective Inspector Tim Dobson, of the Met's homicide and serious crime command, said tests were underway to identify the body, which is believed to be male.
He said: 'It is believed that the body may have been at the scene between 15 and 20 years.
'While inquiries are underway to establish the identity of this person we are keen to speak to anyone who may have lived in this road around that time.

Neighbours said police were seen removing bags from the house yesterday. They said the garden had been covered with a patio for several years.
Will Rollo, 31, who installs home cinemas, said: 'They were drilling yesterday afternoon but I think they've dug it all up now.
'It's a couple who live at the house. I think he is unwell. I knew he had cancer.'
Insurance firm managing director John Hooper, 53, said: 'The police came round to say they were investigating the possibility a body was in the back garden. I don't know any more than that.'
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: 'We were told a week ago by the police that they were investigating and then they arrived yesterday.
'The police told us that they had information a body could have been there for at least 10 years.'
Police will continue digging for up to a week to see if more bodies are buried at the property.
Two other men aged 47 and 52 were arrested and remain in custody at a central London police station, the Metropolitan Police said.
