A man stabbed his ex-partner's mother to death then left his former lover a chilling message in blood before leaping to his death from a city centre car park, a police source said.
He knifed the woman, 69, at her semi-detached bungalow in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, at about 6.40pm yesterday, and also attacked the woman's 37-year-old son.
He then fled 30 miles to Manchester where he leapt eight floors from the top of a car park in the city, soon after midnight.
The chilling message daubed in blood on a wall before the murderer killed himself
Written in blood on a wall was the chilling message: '**** you Claire'.
A source said the message was linked to the murder investigation, and was believed to be directed at the killer's ex-partner.
It was believed the couple had split acrimoniously.
'It is not known if the woman who died was the intended victim," the source said. 'But she might well have been.'
Her semi-detached bungalow was cordoned off and a police officer stood at the end of her drive.
Blood could be seen smeared on her white front door.
Meanwhile in Manchester, the spot from where the killer jumped was unguarded, and more blood could clearly be seen on railings.
A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: 'Detectives investigating the murder of a woman in Huddersfield yesterday are liaising with Greater Manchester Police after a man was found dead in Manchester city centre early today.
'Shortly after midnight, the body of a man was found at a multi-storey car park in Hanover Street.
'It is believed he had fallen from the roof.
'He was pronounced dead at the scene and a post mortem is expected to take place later today. The death is not believed to be suspicious.'
The 37-year-old man who was stabbed remains in hospital, where his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening. The 69-year-old woman died in hospital yesterday evening a short while after the attack in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire.
Michael Hunt, 46, an RAC man, said his son found a knife close to the scene.
He said: 'It had a blade about six inches long. The police came down and then cordoned everything off and it has been closed all night.
'He was shocked, obviously, but he was glad he had been able to do something.
'He watches CSI so he knew not to touch the knife.'
Mr Hunt, who lives close to the scene, despaired of the latest violence which came days after shopkeeper Gurmail Singh, 63, was killed during an armed raid.
Four appeared in court yesterday charged with murdering and robbing him.
He said: 'It's all about knife culture. It's shocking.'
Local councillor Jean Calvert said: 'This is another dreadful incident. The other murder only happened a couple of miles away. I am quite shocked this could happen here.'
She said Bradley Road was a busy route for drivers trying to get on to the M62, but remained 'a very nice area'.
