Minneapolis mayoral hopeful Al Flowers was at the home of a convicted crack dealer, according to law enforcement.
Minneapolis mayoral candidate Al Flowers was cited for marijuana possession recently at the Edina home of a Crips gang member who has numerous convictions for dealing crack cocaine, according to a law enforcement official and a search warrant.
The Hennepin County Violent Offenders Task Force executed the warrant Sept. 23 at the home of Brandon M. Wilson, 29, in the 6100 block of France Av. S.
County sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Kiava said that deputies ticketed Flowers for possessing a small amount of marijuana.
He was not arrested.
In a written statement, his lawyer, Jill Clark, said that Flowers "is not aware of any allegation that marijuana was located on him or that he was arrested. Flowers has heard that law enforcement claims to have found a tiny bit of marijuana inside a house that he had visited."
Kiava said deputies jailed Wilson on a possible weapons charge. He has not been charged, but the investigation remains open, she said.
Flowers, 50, is a well-known character at City Hall and around town. At turns affable and agitated, he has frequently sued the city and accused police of brutality.
He is one of many lesser-known candidates mounting long-shot campaigns against DFL Mayor R.T. Rybak, who is seeking a third term.
Flowers' campaign website, www.truthtothepeople.org, calls him a "community activist, father [and] small business owner." He ran a day care out of his home from 1996-2000, the site said.
The search warrant said that in a bedroom of Wilson's home, deputies found Flowers' wallet and identification, mailings to him and "advertisements" for him. From the same bedroom they confiscated an unspecified amount of marijuana, including two "blunts," according to the warrant.
