People who think wearing the swastika is edgy and clever make me wanna punch them in the face, and anyone who agrees is just as fucking retarded in my eyes.

Then she is not getting a swastika unless she's retarded, because when Hitler adopted the symbol, he made modifications to it to specifically reflect the Nazi party.
I don't buy not knowing. Everyone knows what a swastika looks like unless she was in a basement for years. Just typical spoiled rich assholes thinking they're being clever and risque.

Why isn't the Iron Cross as demonized as the Swastika?

tc9, i don't usually see the hindu one that way, just with the dots in it like this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

obviously different, but it doesn't mean that people don't see it and think you're a nazi unfortunately.  :|

[/quote]It was still used as a symbol of honor by the Nazi party just like the Swastika was used to designate the party itself.

The swastika  was specifically for the Nazi party. The Iron Cross was not. It was a German military symbol in use for almost a hundred years. The nazi connection just had to do with who was in the army. It was like receiving a purple heart.

Re: The pity party for Taylor Swift can end now

While commonly associated with Nazi Germany, the swastika symbol is more than 3,000 years old. The term "Swastika" was originally the name for a hooked cross in Sanskrit, and swastikas have been found on artifacts, such as coins and pottery, from the ancient city of Troy.

Not only are swastikas associated with ancient Troy, the symbols are found in many other cultures, such as Chinese, Japanese, Indian and southern European. By the Middle Ages, the swastika was a well-known symbol and had many different names, depending on the country. In some cultures, such as in ancient China, the symbol is turned counterclockwise (sauvastika).

Throughout its history, the swastika represented life, sun, power, strength and good luck. In the early 20th century, it was still considered a positive symbol. During World War I, it was found on shoulder patches of members of the American 45th Division and the Finnish air force. Only after the Nazi period did its connotation change.

German nationalists chose to use the swastika in the mid-19th century because it was associated with the Aryan race and Germanic history. At the end of the 19th century, German nationalists used the symbol on periodicals and for the official emblem of the German Gymnasts’ League. By the 20th century, it was a common symbol used in Germany to represent German nationalism and pride, for example, as the emblem for the Wandervogel, a German youth group. Swastikas also were used, however, in anti-Semitic periodicals.

The swastika officially became the emblem for the Nazi Party on August, 7, 1920, at the Salzburg Congress. Describing the new flag in Mein Kampf, Hitler said the swastika symbolized the victory of the Aryan man.

Today the symbol is most commonly associated with Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, neo-Nazis and other hate groups.

While I agree that the pity party for Taylor Swift should end, and her "I didn't know" excuse was lame.. it's not like she's wearing the shirt.  She's a celeb who is probably asked to take pictures with every stranger she comes across, and this guy is nasty, so she probably didn't check him out thoroughly.  I have to say, if I were in her position, I would probably smile, take the picture, and then get the hell away from him.  A douche who is weird enough to wear a swastika shirt might have freaked out if she had bruised his ego and refused a pic.

It was at Katy Perry's birthday party. Everyone there was industry. She's not blind and I would have 100% refused to take a pic with some hipster moron in a swastika shirt. I'd fucking boot him out, actually.

No, I guess I am saying I feel for those that have had it in their culture as a good and positive symbol should be able to take it back and not feel shitty for wearing it, displaying it and hoping it stays in the exact position so as not to be misconstrued as hate.

I agree with this. I think that kid wearing it was trying to be a shocking little asshole and should be held down and drowned in genital warts infested penises, though.

Re: The pity party for Taylor Swift can end now

There was a quote by someone talking about the actions of the Nazis leaving a stain on Germany for a thousand years, and unfortunately, it's gonna be quite sometime before people see a swastika and their first thought is a buddhist temple.

Even people like us who understand that the symbol has a history and exists outside of the Nazi history can't make that jump yet.

She should have exercised better judgment, period. I bet that was the only pic that fucking hipster got all night, too. That dude has douche written all over him.
