    Bethanie Dougherty (40) - missing since April 1, 2008

It took a long time to admit to himself, but Bethanie "Buffy" Dougherty's father believes his daughter is probably not alive.
Still, there's always that spot of doubt - or in this case, hope.
"We do still have some hope because there's so little information," said Terry Curtis, adding later, "It just seems incredible somebody could disappear so thoroughly."
Friends and family of Dougherty gathered Thursday at the Three Bear Inn in Marathon to mark the anniversary of the disappearance of the Killawog mother of three. The Broome County Sheriff's Office is still actively investigating the case, but a year after starting their investigation, detectives don't seem to be any closer to finding Buffy.
"Somebody out there knows something, and we're looking for that tip to help break the case," said Sgt. Jason Ellis.
Dougherty, 41, was last seen in her home around 10 p.m. April 1, 2008. Despite vast searches, which friends still carry on to this day, no sign of her has ever been found.
During a smaller gathering at Dougherty's house about 3 a.m. Wednesday, close family members prayed for their lost loved one outside her former home, Curtis said.
Around 3 a.m. on April 2, 2008, neighbors called 911 to report screams in the tiny hamlet of Killawog, but police found no sign of any problems. Dougherty was gone the next day, her car, cell phone, purse and clothes left behind.
Dougherty's three children live with their father, from whom Dougherty was divorced, in Marathon.
The case has sparked national interest. A Los Angeles production company, Brand New Entertainment, has expressed interest in missing women from the region, including Dougherty and Bambi Madden of Binghamton.
The production company is considering producing a show on the issue for the Arts & Entertainment network and has contacted Dougherty's family for an interview.
About 100 people gathered in Marathon on Thursday. They cried, they hugged, they drank and they remembered the woman that Jennie Bailey remembered as her "bestest friend."
Bailey and Lynda Gagnon stood in the inn's parking lot, talking about the trip they took to Jamaica together and the matching butterfly tattoos they all got in Bailey's kitchen a few years ago.
As 365 purple balloons were released - one for each day Dougherty's been missing - Bailey yelled to the sky, "I love you, Buffy."

At around 3:00am April 2, 2008 there were two calls to 911 with reports of hearing a woman screaming, from people that live near Bethanie; who would have been getting up at that time to prepare for her job at the Xtra Mart convenience store in Freeville, New York. The New York State Police responded to the calls but were unable to find any problems. All of her clothes and personal belongings were found in the house and her car was parked in the driveway. The Police have found no sign of a struggle in or near Bethanie’s home and are looking into all leads that come in regarding her disappearance.

    Posted on last years anniversary

Imagine seeing your mom before going to bed and then waking up the next day and she’s gone without a trace. This is not imagination for one of Bethanie Dougherty’s children. This is reality.

This April 1st will mark 5 years since Bethanie Dougherty of Killawog, Broome County went missing. And as the 5th anniversary of her disappearance approaches, her family is still no closer to knowing what happened or where she is today.

Bethanie was last seen by her son between 10pm and 11pm on April 1, 2008 at her home on Jennings Creek Road in Killawog. At 6am the next day, her son noticed she was missing. Her car and all of her personal belongings were left behind and her clothing was laid out for work on her bed.

Neighbors heard a woman screaming in the area between 3am and 3:30am ( which is when Bethanie would have been getting up to get ready for her job at the Xtra Mart convenience store in Freeville) and called 911, but when police arrived, they didn’t find anything suspicious. Bethanie’s son was in the house with her that night and didn’t hear or see anything unusual either.

Bethanie isn’t the only person in her family to go missing. Her cousin Marla Greene-Ware was reported missing in 1998. Two weeks later her body was found in her own apartment. She’d been dead for months and while her death is considered suspicious, nobody has been charged. There’s no evidence that Bethanie’s disappearance is related to her cousin’s death.

At the time of her disappearance, Bethanie had three teen kids and was separated from her husband. They were planning to divorce, however her relatives say there was no sign of abuse in her marriage.

Bethanie has three tattoos: a vine with flowers on her left ankle; a purple butterfly over tribal markings on her lower back and three Chinese scroll type symbols on her upper back between her shoulder blades. She has three piercings in her right ear and five piercings in her left ear.

Someone knows something. If you’re that someone, please do the right thing and let the authorities know. Bethanie’s children and family haven’t given up hope that she’s still alive and they deserve to know what’s happened to her.

Wait, her son stayed the night there? Yet, a neighbor is the one who called people because they heard screaming? If the son were in the house, I would think HE would be the one to hear it and call.....he should've heard it if a neighbor did. Weird. I wonder how old he was at the time?

    18 apparently.

Dougherty was last seen by her 18-year-old son, according to Broome County Sheriff David Harder. Neighbors called 911 around 3 a.m. Wednesday to report hearing a woman's screams, but police who responded found nothing out of the ordinary, Harder said.
Dougherty was reported missing later that day, and a police search was launched Thursday.
The screams were heard about the same time Dougherty usually would get up for work, Fedish said. Dougherty worked at the Xtra Mart convenience store in Freeville. About a year ago, she lost her job at the Cortland Community Re-entry Program, a rehabilitation facility for people with brain injuries, Brown said.

I do think it's kind of weird that her son wouldn't have heard the screams, but I think my brother would be similar. He is the heaviest sleeper ever and we have thought he was dead a few times because we need to shake him and scream to wake him up. If it was just one or two screams, I don't think it's too unbelievable that the son may not have heard.

Hmm. I didn't think this through. I always assumed the son was a young or pre-teen & someone grabbed her when she went out to her car to leave for work, but if her clothes were still laid out, it had to have happened inside before she dressed.

Logic says inside her own house has to be the initial crime scene.

I'm not accusing anyone but I beLIEve her son needs to be looked into further and maybe hook him up to Polly....
