Joseph LaRoche was arraigned Friday morning in Providence District Court, accused of killing 40-year-old Gerald “Jerry” Blair.

Court documents obtained by 12 News state LaRoche “willfully, deliberately and maliciously” stabbed and murdered Blair on Tuesday, July 14.

According to the affidavit, a group of people were socializing on the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Bridge around 10:30 p.m. when a homeless man approached them and “began breakdancing.”

Police said members of the group began antagonizing him and challenged him to a “slap boxing” wrestling match. During the scuffle, someone allegedly threw one of the man’s shoes into the river and another person “forcefully slapped” him.

The affidavit states Blair then stepped in between the group to defend the man. Surveillance footage allegedly showed LaRoche walking behind Blair while holding a black knife.

Seconds later, Blair was seen lying on his back with what police described as a large wound to the chest. Police said Blair raised his hands in an apparent attempt to defend himself as several people continued punching and striking him.

Blair eventually stood to his feet and allegedly tried to flee. Police said several people, including LaRoche, chased after him while LaRoche was still holding the knife.

Surveillance footage showed LaRoche strike Blair once more, who had fallen to the ground, before the group dispersed.

Officers were called to the scene just after 10:45 p.m. to find Blair lying on the bridge with multiple stab wounds. He was rushed to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

A Canadian dentist murdered his two sons, then firebombed the practice where he worked and killed himself in a vehicle blaze — two years after reportedly emailing his children’s mother that he would “kill everyone around her.”

Mohammed Al-Lami, 40, is believed to have murdered his sons, aged 7 and 12, in his south Ottawa home before he was found dead in a vehicle fire in Kemptville on the morning of June 29, according to the Ottawa Police Service.

Police also linked Al-Lami to a blaze at the dental practice where he worked in Iroquois, according to cops and the CBC.

Al-Lami railed against his ex-wife and the criminal justice and family court systems in a multi-page handwritten note discovered on the desk in his office, the outlet reported.

He mentioned three people by name whom he viewed as corrupt, prompting authorities to rush to ensure they were safe, and ranted that his ex was the abuser in their relationship, the report added.

The deranged father was on active probation for threatening to cause bodily harm to his ex-wife and the mother of the two slain boys in 2024, according to court records obtained by the publication.

During a short trial in February this year, Al-Lami represented himself and rejected the court’s offer to resolve the matter with a one-year peace bond, the outlet reported.

His ex-wife, who has not been identified, told the courtroom that the couple were married and had two children before divorcing in 2022.

After that, the dentist stopped sending child support and sent a shocking email in 2024 with a slew of disturbing threats.

“I will kill everyone around you and your pimp … in a very wild and savage way. I won’t kill you. I will leave you alone, disabled in a wheelchair that you can’t move, even to visit your loved ones’ graves,” the letter said in part, per the outlet.

“I’ll make you an example of the unfair justice system. I will make you a worldwide story,” he said.

“When you do something wrong to me, you pay for it. You pay for it either through the child support or whatever I feel suitable to respond to your actions until I end it the way I like for you and [your] pig,” he wrote, referring to his ex’s current partner.

The dentist was on active probation for threatening to cause bodily harm to his ex-wife and mother of the two slain boys.

The woman testified that she was “astonished” by her ex-husband’s vile words, and had simply been asking him for the child support.

She said during cross-examination that she decided to come forward about the threatening email out of concern for her children and at her current partner’s request.

“I just felt, what if he literally, this happened? And then who’s going to be there for my kids if anything happened to me?” the mother said.

“I just don’t know what can happen. I just didn’t want to live with the unpredictability,” she testified, adding she hadn’t taken his previous threats seriously.

Al-Lami told the judge he “didn’t have anything to say” to the allegations. A judge later ordered him to serve 12 months of probation, denying the Crown’s requests for treatment programming and a DNA order.

Police said in a statement that they are continuing to investigate the murder-suicide and will release more information once more “forensic examinations” are completed.

Authorities will not release the names of the children out of respect for their mother, whom they are “supporting” at this time.

A New York woman has been charged with manslaughter after her baby choked to death on popcorn kernels, Long Island prosecutors said.

Olivia Bithorn, 36, was crying in court as the Nassau County District Attorney's Office described how her long history of alcohol abuse allegedly led to her 18-month-old son's death.

Bithorn allegedly gave her son, Luke Russel Jr., and his 3-year-old sister a bag of unpopped popcorn kernels, then left them alone while she drank vodka in the bathroom of her Merrick apartment when the children were visiting her in April.

"Her son was blue and cold to the touch. They estimate, allegedly, he was dead for over an hour before 911 was called," Nassau DA Anne Donnelly said. "Allegedly, she was in the bathroom possibly getting sick because she had drank so much."

The little girl was the one who found her brother unresponsive.

"It's an accident if you leave the room for a few minutes and your child is, but it's criminal if you actually give your child these kernels to eat and not be present if something happens," the DA said.

DNA from a soda bottle allegedly has linked a Massachusetts woman to the 1985 death of her newborn son, who was found dead in the woods by a father and son hunting rabbits, authorities said this week.

Dianne Curry Peck, 59, appeared in court on Tuesday, where she pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in connection with the death of her son, who became known as "Baby Boy Doe" of Mansfield, Massachusetts.

An autopsy determined the child was born alive before dying a short time later.

The Mansfield Police Department, along with former New England Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan, paid for the baby's funeral. The case went cold until Bristol County investigators reopened it in 2022, partnering with the FBI and state authorities.

Using forensic genetic genealogy, investigators analyzed the baby’s DNA, which eventually led them to Peck. DNA recovered from a soda bottle taken from her trash ultimately linked her to the child, authorities said.

At the time of the birth, Peck was a 17-year-old student at Mansfield High School. She allegedly admitted to investigators that she had given birth to a child in the back seat of her ex-boyfriend’s car, Boston 25 reported.

She claimed she gave the baby to him because he said he knew someone who would adopt the infant. Peck told investigators she believed she had given birth to a girl and never spoke to her ex-boyfriend again. He died in 2020, according to the FBI.

Prosecutors also noted there is no evidence that anyone — including Peck’s ex-boyfriend — knew she was pregnant.
