Marion Christopher Barry, the son of the late Washington Mayor Marion Barry, has died of a suspected drug overdose, according to media reports. He was 36.

Barry died from synthetic marijuana, The Washington Post reported.

Barry's father gained notoriety in 1990 after he was busted on video smoking crack cocaine, then went to jail. But he remained a popular figure in D.C. politics, again being elected mayor in 1995. Marion S. Barry, 78, died in November 2014.

Barry — who went by Christopher Barry — spoke at a memorial service for his father in December.

"There's not a person in this city or a corner of the city that he hasn't touched," he said. "And in knowing that, Marion Barry will never die. You know they say D.C. will never be the same because Marion Barry's gone. You're right, because now there's thousands of millions of Marion Barrys out there."

His father's death motivated Christopher Barry to run for D.C. Council in 2015. He finished in sixth place in a special election.

Christopher Barry also faced legal troubles, including a confrontation with bank employees in January 2015 and previous charges for drugs and driving under the influence.
