The grandson of legendary CBS anchor Walter Cronkite took his own life over the weekend at his Maine college, just days away from graduation.

Peter Cronkite, 22, was found Sunday in his dorm room on Colby College by police in Waterville.

The rugby player and standout scholar took his own life, the Cronkite family said.

Waterville police said they responded to an emergency medical call to Colby but refused to provide details.

The Cronkite family said Peter Cronkite was due to graduate in May as a Classics major.

He was the sports editor of The Colby Echo and co-captain of the Colby rugby team.

Cronkite's work as a classics major earned him an achievement award that he was going to get at his May graduation.

It also took him on expeditions to Greece and to Ostia, Italy.

Cronkite lived on the Upper East Side and attended St. Bernard's in Manhattan as well as elite prep school Horace Mann in the Bronx.

A Mets fan, he spent last summer working for the team at Citi Field, his family said.

Friends and faculty at the bucolic Colby campus were saddened and stunned by the news.

"It is with deep sadness that I write to report that Peter Cronkite '15 took his own life this weekend," Colby president David Greene wrote in a letter to students on Monday.

"Peter's death is devastating to his family, his many friends, and the entire Colby community. Our hearts are heavy as we try to come to terms with this tremendous loss," the college president said.

The grandson of the iconic CBS news anchor had an "kind, incredibly likable personality," Greene said.

Cronkite was also a tutor at the College Writing Center for two years and coached youth hockey.

An avid film buff, Cronkite was the voice of Dennis the Menace for an animated movie when he was nine years old, his family said.

He's survived by his parents, actress Deborah Rush and Chip Cronkite, and his brother Walter Cronkite lV.

The family has planned a funeral service for Saturday at the Church of the Heavenly Rest in Manhattan.

The Cronkite family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Colby College men's rugby team.
