A Chesterfield Township teen was killed early Wednesday morning after being struck by a train near 21 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue. Police suspect it was a suicide.

"The investigation is ongoing and at this point it appears to be a suicide," said Det. Sgt. Deron Myers of the Chesterfield Township Police Department.

At 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, police received a 911 call reporting that a man had been hit by a train on the track that runs north-south between 21 Mile and 22 Mile roads west of Gratiot Avenue, Myers said. The train tracks are located near the end of Terra Industrial Drive.

At the scene, police spoke with the train conductor and determined the male was a 16-year-old Anchor Bay student. The train remained stationary while investigators reconstructed the incident. Myers estimated the train was stopped until about 6 a.m.

A candlelight memorial is being planned for the teen. The event is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Anchor Bay High School football field. The school is located at 6319 County Line Road in Ira Township.

"He was well-liked," Myers noted.
