Dead in a Columbia dorm room, 21-year-old Jessica Fingers of Monticello, N.Y., was found face-up on the floor at the East Campus of Columbia University. A possible drug overdose is being investigated as the cause of the young girl's death and police did not arrest anyone nor suspect any foul play, reported the Daily News on April 1, 2013.
The 21-year-old girl was found dead on the Columbia dorm room floor on Easter Sunday morning at 11:48 a.m. and was immediately pronounced dead.
Jessica Fingers, who would have been a graduate at the Columbia University in 2013, had been on leave for the last year and was on campus visiting friends. Jessica was a member and a distance runner of the cross country team and was majoring in sociology. She had received a full scholarship to Columbia and was planning on pursuing a career in marketing or law.
Jessica Fingers' 45-year-old mother who had the daunting task of identifying her daughter's body at the Manhattan medical examiner's office stated that her daughter had been on a leave of absence from Columbia University after she suffered a stroke on Jan. 28, 2012, due to blood clots in her brain.
Jessica Fingers' grieving mother blames Jessica's boyfriend, Peter Russell, a self-described freelance tattoo artist. "I never liked him. … He influenced the decisions she made in the last few months. He wasn't good for her. … She said she was in love. … That's why she wanted to go into the city all of the time, to visit him."
Since many family members and friends of Jessica agree with Jessica's mother that Peter Russell, who "came from a broken home out on Long Island" and "not from the best background," was bad news for the 21-year-old girl and let her on the wrong path, Peter Russell is receiving threats on his Facebook page. According to one of Jessica's cousins, "Instead of helping her on the path of getting back into Columbia, which should have been the focus, he was taking her off that focus."
However, like Jessica Fingers' mother, Peter Russell is devastated about his girlfriend's death and posted on his Facebook page "My life is over."
Peter Russell, who is not a student at Columbia University, also wrote on his Facebook page that he was with Jessica in the Columbia dorm room when she died.
"'I woke up and the love of my life was dead next to me'," he wrote on a page filled with photos of the couple embracing. 'My life is over...Shes gone so i have nothing to live for'."
As of Monday, police are awaiting the results of an autopsy of the young girl who was found dead in the Columbia dorm room but "police do not suspect foul play."
With a medical history of blood clots in the brain, until a medical examiner will complete his autopsy, Jessica's death will remain a mystery. Death due to natural causes or a drug overdose.
