A day after New Palestine High School freshman Brayton Baker died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, school administrators and students found themselves trying to cope with the shocking loss.

"It's all pretty raw right now," Principal Keith Fessler said Thursday. "Some of the kids are really struggling, and this is going to affect them in different ways."

Hancock County Sheriff's officials were called to Brayton's home in the Schildmeier neighborhood in New Palestine around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday. It was outside the home that sheriff's deputies later detained Hancock County Coroner Tamara Vangundy on suspicion of drunkenness.

While the investigation into Brayton's death is still in progress, authorities are investigating the shooting as a suicide. Brayton was 15.
