After closing in on fugitive Damon Ferreira, investigators with the Oakland Police Department say the suspect ended his own manhunt with a gunshot. Cops say Ferreira shot and killed himself after running from murder charges for several weeks.

On Nov. 18, 2009, police say they finally caught up with the fugitive. Cops say they knew Ferreira had relatives in Stockton, Calif. and managed to track him there.

Police say the trail led them to an abandoned apartment where they closed in on the fugitive. When a team of officers asked Ferreira to leave the apartment and surrender, Ferreira said he'd be right out.

But instead, he shot himself.

The manhunt started on Sept. 23, 2009 when cops say he shot and killed two men and injured another -- all over a petty fight.

At around 8:30 that evening, police responded to a report of gunshots in an Oakland neighborhood. At the scene, they found the bodies of 48-year-old Damon Wessel and 44-year-old Michael Caldwell.

Cops also found a third victim who survived the attack, though they are not releasing his identity.

Police traced the crime to Ferreira and learned that during the time of the deadly shoot-out, Ferreira had also been on the run for violating his parole following a carjacking incident.
