Bossier City police are investigating an overnight shooting that left one man dead.

It happened about 1:30 a.m. at Old Minden Road and Benton Spur, authorities said.

The victim, James Dean Smith, 21, of Vivian, was sitting at a red light in his car with a passenger when another vehicle, believed to be a gold or tan four-door sedan, pulled up next to his car, Bossier City Spokesman Mark Natale said.

Someone inside the sedan opened fire and struck Smith, Natale said.

The shooter's vehicle drove away from the scene while Smith's car continued westbound on Old Minden Road before coming to a stop near the Benton Road intersection, Natale said.

The passenger got out of the car and contacted a nearby Bossier City patrol officer, Natale said.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene, Natale said.

Police are searching for a suspect believed to be a white male with a close haircut, Natale said. No further description has been provided, and there are no suspects, he said.
The case is being handled by the Bossier City Police Department Violent Crimes Unit.
