The Emmet County Sheriff's Office identified this morning the body found floating in the Straits of Mackinac on Monday as that of 19-year-old, Jacob Greaves of Saline.

According to preliminary reports, Greaves left a family campsite off of Esther Lane — southwest of Mackinaw City — in Emmet County's Wawatam Township at approximately 4 a.m. Monday. Investigators believe he was trying to paddle a canoe around Johnson's Point either to Mackinac Island or St. Ignace when he encountered difficulty.

Authorities were unaware of any boating emergency until receiving a call shortly after 1 p.m. Monday directing them to the floating body in an area west of the Mackinac Bridge. The U.S. Coast Guard, in a 25-foot small response boat out of St. Ignace, was the first on the scene. Greaves, who was wearing a life jacket was transported to the Mackinaw City Marina where he was pronounced dead.

At the time of the recovery, authorities did not have any idea who the deceased man was as there were no reports of missing persons or overdue watercraft in the area. The Mackinaw County Police Department had requested the public's help in identifying the victim in the evening hours on Monday and once his identity and location of departure were established the Emmet County Sheriff Department became the lead investigating agency.

Cause of death has not been determined pending a report from the Emmet County Medical Examiner.

The Emmet County Sheriff Department was assisted by the Mackinaw City Police, the U.S. Coast guard and Mackinaw City Ambulance.
