Students at Mukwonago High School signed a banner for the family of Mitchell Fischer of Eagle, a MHS junior who died March 24 from possible self-inflicted wounds. Parents were informed of the incident by an Alert Now email on Thursday. Students were informed of his death Friday morning, and a moment of silence was held throughout the school.

"We are working our way through a situation that is very difficult," said Superintendent Paul Strobel.

Support staff was on hand to assist students during the day on Friday, and district social worker Cathi Treacy and MHS guidance counselor Carla Brenton followed Fischer's class schedule, talking to students about the importance of taking care of themselves and giving out information on 2-1-1, the three digit dialing code designated in 2000 by the Federal Communications Commission to provide widespread public access to community information and referral services, Treacy said.

Fischer, who moved to Eagle from the Franklin School District this school year, was described by teachers as a welcoming, non-judgmental, kind student who was his own individual, according to Treacy.

"He was not afraid to be himself. He always said hi when I passed him in the hall," said Brenton. "He was a very unique individual. He was a really neat, polite kid."

Brenton said Fischer's death has been "an unfortunate thing to go through," but students and staff have been doing the best they can.

Treacy said staff members were made aware of student behavior they should look for as the school dealt with the loss. Students who were having difficulties were referred to counselors or social workers.

Funeral services for Fischer were held Monday at Max A. Sass & Sons Greenridge Chapel with burial at Interment Arlington Park Cemetery.

He is survived by his parents, Tammy Fischer (Chris Antczak) and Scott and Patricia Fischer; siblings Calvin and Alexandra; step-siblings Michael, Kayla and Nicholas Stawicki; grandparents Jefferson Gillespie and Jerry and Betty Fischer. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Nancy Gillespie.
