Family and friends have said a tragic farewell to "happy, smiley" schoolgirl Jenna Darnley in Lancashire.

Just a day after what would have been her 16th birthday, hundreds of people packed Grimsargh Parish Church, in Preston Road, Grimsargh, to pay their respects to a life lost too young.

Jenna, a pupil at Longridge High School, was found hanged at her home in The Hills, Grimsargh, near Preston, in the early hours of May 2.

On Tuesday, many of her friends wore bright clothes in memory of their popular friend and traffic was brought to a standstill as the funeral cortege arrived at the church.

During the service, which lasted 40 minutes, Jenna's mum Angela Darnley paid an emotional tribute to her youngest daughter.

She said: "We have so many happy memories, we will still be standing here talking about them next week.

"We will always have happy memories of Christmas times - we always used to visit Father Christmas three times before Christmas Day.

"Every time it snowed she was out making a snowman or on a sledge. She had sleep overs and it seemed to be different girls every time - she had so many friends."

Mrs Darnley said her daughter enjoyed being a pupil at Longridge High School.

She said: "She had five wonderful years there - she was clever and did well in the subjects she enjoyed. Jenna loved animals - her latest addition was a Hamster called Betty.

"She even recently said she wanted a pet lamb.

"You will forever be in our hearts and minds - love you so much darling."

Mrs Darnley said Jenna did a school project where she was asked how she would like to be remembered and she designed a smiley face.

She said: "She wanted to be remembered for this because it is a picture of a happy smiley face."

During the service two of Jenna's favourite songs were played, Heaven by DJ Sammy and Basshunter's Now You're Gone.

The service also included hymns The Lord's My Shepherd and All Things Bright and Beautiful which was chosen because of Jenna's love of animals.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned into Jenna's death.
