Matthew L. Shelnutt, 19, of County Route 5, Clayton, died Monday, Sept. 29, of an apparent suicide in the town of Clayton.

Calling hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, at Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., 320 John St., Clayton. The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 3, at Clayton United Methodist Church, 324 John St., with Pastor Donald Briant officiating. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, town of Cape Vincent.

Instead of flowers, the family wishes donations to either T. I. E. R. S., P.O. Box 524, Clayton, NY 13624 or to the Jefferson Community College Foundation, 1220 Coffeen St., Watertown, NY 13601.

Born Jan. 3, 1989, in Orlando, Fla., son of Harry M. and Shari L. Garnsey Shelnutt III, he attended Thousand Islands High School and received his G.E.D. from Jefferson Community College. He was attending the college at the time of his death.

He had also worked on Grindstone Island for Ken Deedy.

He had played basketball, hockey, and baseball. He enjoyed fishing, watching football, snowmobiling, and 4-wheeling, especially on Grindstone Island.

Surviving are his mother, Shari L. Shelnutt, and her companion, Mark Chapman, Clayton; his father, Harry M. Shelnutt III, Oviedo, Fla.; a sister, Jane M. Shelnutt, Clayton; his maternal grandmother, Phyllis J. Garnsey, Clayton; his paternal grandparents, Harry M. and Joan Shelnutt, Jr., Oviedo, Fla.; and his many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his maternal grandfather, James L. Garnsey, on Feb. 25, 2003.
