Friends and family of a Kingston teen gathered Friday night to remember the blue-eyed girl they lost last week.
More than 300 attended a memorial at Lewis Funeral Chapel to remember 16-year-old Chelsie Grace, a North Kitsap High School junior who took her own life last week.
Along with an outpouring of support and stories at the memorial, dozens of comments have been posted on the teen''s Myspace.com account, and friends have adorned the Kingston Skate Park and North Kitsap High rock with messages about their friend.
"Our whole family was touched by the enormous love shown by the students of both NKHS and Spectrum school," the Grace family said in a statement to the Kitsap Sun.
Friends and family recalled a lively girl with an infectious smile and big blue eyes.
The North Kitsap community dealt with suicide earlier this year, when two Kingston Junior High students took their own lives.
According to the Washington State Youth Suicide Prevention Program, about 80 percent of suicidal youth give signals or talk about suicide.
The organization offers tips to spot a potential suicide risk.
The key to prevention is to know these signs and how to help. They may indicate someone is thinking about suicide. The more signs, the greater the risk. They may include:
A previous suicide attempt.
Current talk of suicide or making a plan.
A strong wish to die or a preoccupation with death.
Signs of depression, such as moodiness, hopelessness, withdrawal.
Increased alcohol and/or other drug use.
Hinting at not being around in the future or saying goodbye.
If a friend mentions suicide, take it seriously. If he or she has expressed an immediate plan, or has access to a gun or other potentially deadly means, do not leave him or her alone. Get help immediately.
For complete information, visit the Washington State Youth Suicide Prevention Program Web site at www.yspp.org. In emergencies or for immediate help, call 800-TALK and you will be referred to a local crisis expert.
