Ryan Elliot Folmer, the son of Redlands Daily Facts editor James Folmer, died Saturda, Sept. 9. He was 24.

Folmer was a 2001 graduate of Orangewood High School in Redlands and earned an associate of arts degree in graphic arts at Brooks College in Long Beach. He worked as a graphic artist for Vestal Watches in Newport Beach. Until a few months ago, he worked for the Irvine corporate offices of Tilly's, skater-oriented clothing chain.

Folmer died Friday in his sleep in his apartment in Huntington Beach. An autopsy was performed Saturday morning. The cause of death is pending toxicology reports, but it is suspected to be a drug overdose.

He was an accomplished BMX bike rider and an excellent athlete. After several BMX accidents, he became active in videotaping his biking friends. His friends say he was a trendsetter and an avid music lover who frequently burned CDs for them.

He was born June 10, 1982, in Escondido. His family moved to Temecula in 1990 and came to Redlands in 1998. He attended Redlands East Valley High School before transferring to Orangewood in his senior year.

Folmer is survived by his father James Folmer of Redlands, his mother Sharon Folmer of Ventura, his sisters Heather Folmer of Ventura and Jessica Folmer of Redlands, his grandfather Carroll Folmer of San Jacinto, maternal grandparents Bob and Barbara Meech of Vista, three uncles, an aunt and two cousins.

Folmer's brain was donated to the University of California, Irvine, for a study on bipolar disorder and skin was taken on behalf of OneLegacy for burn victims.
