David Mussen, a former West Virginia University student and band member of the Distorted Penguins, was found dead early Wednesday morning.
The 19-year-old lead singer and guitarist of the four-year-old band was found at approximately 4 a.m. at his family home in Keyser, W.Va., along with his mother and father. David’s father, Doug Mussen, 50, allegedly shot his wife, Robin, also 50, David and then himself.
According to the Keyser Sheriff’s office, investigations involving the case are still ongoing.
“We’re not even thinking about the band now,” said fellow band member Derek Shank. “We just got finished recording an album on Monday and now it’s just sitting there unmixed. None of us really know what to do.”
Mussen, along with Shank, was considered one of the “leaders” of the band.
“We were the song writers,” Shank said. “We had our fusses now and then, but lately we had been getting along really well and things were going good for the band.”
“Sometimes I thought he was a genius when he made up these incredible melodies right on the spot,” Shank elaborated about Mussen. “They were the type of tunes that were loved by everyone and ones that you knew would go somewhere.”
While enrolled at WVU last semester as a freshman, Mussen was studying business.
Many around campus may also recall the 5-foot-9-inch brown-haired and brown-eyed singer and guitarist soliciting audience members to Distorted Penguins shows.
“Yeah, that was Dave and Pickles,” Shank said of Mussen and Chris “Pickles” Rondeau, also a band member.
“Music was his life,” said former Distorted Penguins member and WVU student Steve Amtower. “He’s always wanted to be a famous musician and inspired others with his dream while making them believe that they could do the same thing.”
“He was a great guy,” Shank said. “He always had a smile on his face and was always really excited about anything that he did.”
“This past year he really put his heart and soul into the band,” he added. “And it showed. We played every weekend and have been in places all up and down the East coast.”
The Distorted Penguins were scheduled to play their last show of the semester this Saturday, April 29, at the Corner Pocket.
“As of now, we don’t know what we’re going to do,” Shank said.
