One person was killed and four others were injured early Thursday when a sport utility vehicle they were in overturned on Interstate 5 east of Coalinga, California Highway Patrol officers reported.

The Fresno County Coroner's Office said Drew Carder, 19, of North Highlands in the Sacramento area, was thrown out of the SUV and declared dead at the scene.

The driver, Edward Chang, 19, of Santa Clara is thought to have been using drugs and was arrested on suspicion of felony driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter, Sgt. Matt Drewry reported.

Chang suffered minor injuries and was taken to University Medical Center in Fresno for treatment before being booked into the Fresno County Jail.

Another passenger, Robyn Rufo, 18, of San Francisco, also was ejected. She suffered major injuries and was admitted to UMC. A third passenger, Jose Torres, 18, of San Jose, was taken to UMC with minor injuries, officers said.
