Woman, 21, charged in killing of man found dead in Rindge

Brandon Chicklis found dead on side of Route 119

    RINDGE, N.H. ?
A woman was ordered to be held without bail after she was arraigned Tuesday in connection with the killing of a Massachusetts man.

Julia Enright, 21, of Ashburnham, Massachusetts, faces a murder charge in the death of Brandon Chicklis, 20, of Westminster, Massachusetts.

"I'm sure it's very difficult for the family, and my heart goes out to them," said Westminster Police Chief Michael McDonald.

Authorities said cellphone records last placed Chicklis at Enright's home on Packard Hill Road on June 23.

"She also stated that they had spent the day together at her residence," prosecutor Terry McLaughlin said. "She indicated they had been drinking alcohol and that the victim in that case had left to purchase narcotics but never returned."

Chicklis's blood was found in a tree house and inside Enright's car, authorities said.

"It was determined that the victim's blood was present on the stairs leading to the tree house, on the inside of the tree house, under the tree house and in the defendant's vehicle," McLaughlin said.

Prosecutors said the tree house was recently cleaned.

"When the rug was removed, it appeared the blood had seeped down through the floorboards of the tree house," McLaughlin said.

Authorities said Chicklis was killed in Ashburnham and his body was left in Rindge, where it was found July 10 by a jogger off Route 119 in Rindge, New Hampshire.

"The New Hampshire medical examiner observed numerous wounds and ruled that the death was a homicide," McLaughlin said.

Chicklis left his home June 23 to visit family in Windham, but never arrived. His car was found abandoned at a Hannaford supermarket in Rindge, far off the most direct route between Westminster and Windham and about five miles from where his body was found.

It's still not clear how Chicklis died, but investigators said he had been classmates with Enright at a vocational school.

"This was a very thorough investigation and included the work of the state police of New Hampshire and the attorney general's office in New Hampshire," said Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

Tuesday would have been Chicklis's 21st birthday.

Julia Enright, 21, of Ashburnham, was held without bail on a murder charge and a not guilty plea was entered on her behalf, according to the Worcester District Attorney’s office. Her arrest on Monday night stemmed from a weeks-long investigation that spanned Massachusetts and New Hampshire after Chicklis’s body was discovered in early July.
Kristen Beevers, the girlfriend of Chicklis’s father, Paul Chicklis, told Worcester’s Telegram & Gazette the young man was on his way to Windham, New Hampshire, to join them for dinner.

“He was on his way to join us for a belated Father’s Day dinner,” she said.

He was reported missing the next day by his family members after he didn’t show up.
Chicklis and Enright knew each other, according to the DA’s office, having been classmates at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School.

Enright told police she’d made plans to meet her former classmate at her home on June 23 and they spent the day drinking alcohol, the Ledger-Transcript reports. She told authorities Chicklis left to purchase drugs and never returned.

I find it really hard to believe she had no help moving his body from her treehouse, into a vehicle, out of the vehicle & into the water where he was found. There has to be someone else involved in this. I keep expecting to see someone else charged.

Ashburnham suspect: From National Honor Society to accused killer of ex-classmate

ASHBURNHAM -- Among the yearbook entries for the Monty Tech Class of 2015 were photos, quotes, and messages students selected to reflect on their time at the school and look forward to their lives after graduation.

Graphic communications student Julia Enright opted for a quote from Albert Einstein along with two different poses for her senior portrait.

"Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one," the quote reads at the bottom of her yearbook entry.

Three years later, the Ashburnham resident, now 21, is facing the harsh reality of a murder charge. She stands accused of killing a former classmate, Brandon Chicklis, who was reported missing June 23 and whose body was found by a jogger off the side of Route 119 in Rindge, New Hampshire, about two weeks later.

Prosecutors have not said specifically how Chicklis died. But they believe the 20-year-old Westminster resident was killed in Ashburnham. Court records indicate it was multiple injuries that killed him. Records also state blood was found leading up to and inside of a tree house on Enright's property.

Enright had invited Chicklis to her family residence at 171 Packard Hill Road the day he went missing, according to court documents. Phone records placed him at the home and showed no activity afterward.

Enright is being held without bail until her next court date on Aug. 29.

Her arrest and murder charge shocked the neighborhood and has residents looking for answers.

"The whole thing was very unfortunate," said Lisa Cornwall, who lives at nearby 9 Squire Road.

"You feel for both families. They were both young."

Cornwall remembers Enright being a "great kid" who always said thank you and attended Naukeag Lake Club swimming parties when she was younger.

Her husband, George, runs the members-only club that uses the swimming hole located across the street from the gravel driveway that leads to the Enright's home.

Enright was raised by a single father, John, who was a volunteer firefighter and has served on at least one town board, Cornwall said.

Enright is smart and was a good student, she said.

At Monty Tech, Enright was a Mathlete and was inducted into the National Honor Society, according to her 2015 yearbook entry. She also took part in activities like the Yearbook Committee, Anime Club, JROTC, and basketball.

Later she became a phlebotomist -- a professional technician who draws blood for testing -- at a Quest Diagnostics laboratory in Groton, according to court documents.

Ralph Kenney, who lives down the street from Enright, has been in the neighborhood for about a decade, but doesn't know much about the family. They mostly keep to themselves, he said.

"It's hard for a little street like Packard Hill Road to make the news for something terrible," Kenney said.

"Bad things can happen anywhere, but in this area, it's a sleepy hollow."

He has been keeping an eye on the case and has talked about it with his twin daughters who attended Oakmont Regional High School and are a few years older than Enright.

They didn't know her, he said, but his daughters do know a cousin of Enright's because they played sports together.

Linda Parenteau, who also lives on Packard Hill Road, said she hasn't had much interaction with Enright or her father in the neighborhood, but she occasionally saw Enright working at the Dunkin' Donuts inside Mr. Mike's convenience store before it burned down.

"She probably used to wait on us at Dunkin' Donuts or took my friend's blood at the lab," Parenteau said.

Learning about the crime and Enright's alleged involvement felt eerie, she said.

"It makes you wonder what else is there and what else is going on," Parenteau said.

Boyfriend of alleged dominatrix Julia Enright to invoke Fifth Amendment at murder trial

The boyfriend of Julia Enright, an Ashburnham woman accused of murdering an ex-classmate in 2018, told a judge Monday he intends to invoke the Fifth Amendment on most questions prosecutors seek to ask at trial.

The man, John Lind, told Worcester Superior Court Judge Daniel M. Wrenn he would only answer questions about his work and school background if called to the stand.
Julia Enright during a proceeding in Worcester Superior Court in January 2019.

Lind, who has not been charged with a crime, allegedly told investigators that carpeting Enright purchased several days after the murder was needed because of defecation that took place during a sex act between the two.

Prosecutors allege Enright actually purchased carpeting to cover up traces of blood in a treehouse where she murdered 20-year-old Brandon Chicklis of Westminster on June 23, 2018.

They allege Enright, a phlebotomist who allegedly had a side business as a dominatrix, lured Chicklis to a treehouse near her home and murdered him to satisfy a growing urge to kill.
Assistant District Attorney Terry J. McLaughlin read off a long list of questions in court Monday that he would like to ask Lind, including where he was on June 23.

McLaughlin indicated to Wrenn that Enright had texted Lind around the time of the alleged killing and told him there could be a “surprise.”

He also said the two had discussed “bloodplay” in a sexual context and have talked extensively in jailhouse recordings.
Enright, who was 21 at the time of the killing, was a phlebotomist with a side business as a dominatrix, prosecutors have said. She allegedly journaled about an “insatiable curiosity” of killing someone, as well as about her sexual proclivities and other topics prosecutors argue jurors should hear.

Entries discussed Monday include one McLaughlin said Enright wrote about a failed plot to get pregnant and have an abortion in order to bring the fetus home.

Enright had a fixation with bones, McLaughlin said — she would decay dead animals in bags to use their bones as art — and journaled about a desire to obtain bones of a fetus.

According to McLaughlin, Enright got pregnant and had an abortion at Planned Parenthood, but failed at attempts to “bribe” the organization to give her the remains.

The abortion, McLaughlin said, occurred just eight days before the murder. He told Wrenn that prosecutors believe the failed plot is relevant to Enright’s state of mind — and possibly motive — prior to her alleged crime.

After a nearly three-week trial with more than 200 pieces of evidence, a jury found Julia Enright guilty of second-degree murder on Monday, but another trial may be upcoming in the killing of Brandon Chicklis.

Following Monday’s verdict, Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. said his office is reviewing evidence for the potential prosecution of a “co-defendant.”

While Early didn’t mention a specific name, it’s likely that he was referring to Enright’s boyfriend John Lind, who both the defense and prosecution said helped her discard Chicklis’ body in New Hampshire.

“We have taken a look at all the evidence. We’re going to review all of that,” Early said. “Our appeals team is going to look at what we can prove, what we can go forward on, what we are allowed to go forward on and we’ll take that from there.”

A jury on Monday found Enright, 24, guilty of stabbing Chicklis to death inside a treehouse that was situated on a property adjacent to her home at 171 Packard Hill Road in Ashburnham. Chicklis, 20, was reported missing after seeing Enright on June 23, 2018.
Enright will return to court on Jan. 18 for sentencing. She faces a life sentence with the opportunity for parole no sooner than 15 years, but no later than 25 years.

Treehouse murder trial: Julia Enright’s boyfriend, Jonathan Lind, charged with helping dispose of body

Nearly two weeks after a jury found 24-year-old Julia Enright guilty of second-degree murder in the stabbing of Brandon Chicklis, another arrest has been made.

Enright’s boyfriend, Jonathan Lind, has been arrested and charged in connection with the disposal of Chicklis’ body.

Lind has been arrested by State Police Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office with the assistance of Ashburnham police on charges of disinterring or conveying away a human body and accessory after the fact in relation to the killing of Chicklis, according to a statement from the Worcester District Attorney’s office.

Treehouse murder trial: Julia Enright sentenced to life in prison for the murder of Brandon Chicklis

Julia Enright will serve the maximum sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole after 25 years in the 2018 slaying of Brandon Chicklis, which prosecutors argued she carried out as a “surprise gift” for her boyfriend, a judge has ruled.

Judge Daniel Wrenn handed down the sentence on Friday morning after hearing statements from nine family members and friends about how Chicklis’s murder has affected their lives. All asked for the harshest penalties allowable by law.

I somehow missed this case. I have a mutual friend with his Dad. I'm glad that they nailed her. Brandon seemed really sweet.
