Thread: 1 dead, several hurt after ride malfunctions at Ohio State Fair

  1. #51
This ride is at the North Ga state fair where I go yearly .. I have ridden it several times as well .. I used to think and pray it didn't break while I was on it because just thinking about falling off that was sickening .. now I won't ride it since I too feel leery about fair/carnival rides and the way they are put up/taken down so quickly .. i'll stick to the little ones LOL and walking around and eating!

I read the other day that there are like 700 of these rides around the country.

What was that one where the girl was scalped while riding the tilt a whirl or something? That was the last time I considered pop up rides for sure.

That's not a Tilt a Whirl. Don't be dissing my FAVORITE ride. When I win the lottery, I'm having one installed in the back yard.

I thought they closed rides similiar to this one nationwide.

The North Georgia State Fair is in Sept/Oct, so it'll be interesting to see if it's still there. Surely not ... I would hope.

That was in my city. It was a ride called "King" something. It was like a teacup ride where kids are in different seats but there's a handle in the middle. Her hair got caught in the spinning mechanism. She lived but was scalped.

Omaha, Nebraska at the Cinco de Mayo festival in South O.

Even the teacup ride is evil??? That was pretty much the only one I ever thought was kind of benign

Yeah, they have. I got that info when this story first broke and they were just going over how many of these rides had been made. The one at our state fair was closed the next day.

Have you never seen Maximum Overdrive? This is the same thing, just with carnival rides instead of trucks.

Howdy! I grew up in Marietta, so I went every year for a long time ... then didn't for a long time ... then started going again a few years ago when my son got big enough. He's little, though, so we don't ride anything too crazy.

I've never ridden the Cyclops. I really can't take the super-spinny stuff anymore. When I was younger, I could go to Six Flags or the fair and ride the spinny stuff over and over, no problem. Now it makes me feel like I'm going to die. My husband has to ride the Tilt-A-Whirl and stuff like that with our son. I just can't do it.

It's hard to imagine corrosion that severe wasn't visible to the folks who assemble/inspect the rides. Hmm. Either way, someone will get their dick sued off.

Manufacturer Says Corrosion Caused Deadly Ride Accident at Ohio Fair
How in the hell did it pass inspection then? And it's taken down/put up so frequently, no one noticed the corrosion?

A girl did get her feet taken off at Six Flags when a cable snapped on a ride, several other people had injuries, that's probably what you were thinking of too:
    http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/06/21/six.flags.accident/

Which is another reason I side-eye six flags all the time

The corrosion may have been inside the pipe where you couldn't see it. These rides are supposed to either get X-rayed or UT (ultrasonics) once a year.

A statement on KMG's website dated Friday says the company officials visited the accident site and conducted metallurgical tests.

It says the corrosion "dangerously reduced" the thickness on the wall of the beam holding a passenger gondola on the swinging and spinning ride
Since it seems the fair is being so open with what the problem was- my guess is they have the official paperwork from the inspection company showing that it was tested. So this is all going to fall at the feet of that inspection company.

Inspection companies are most likely outside contractors. They come in and perform nondestructive testing on the "weld" joints and do spot checks on the metal. They provide the findings to the fair (or state inspector) who then says Ok- the inspection company passed it. The inspection company fills out the paperwork, gives them the xrays or ultrasonic testing results and leaves.

WOW. Standards must be super low to have that be overlooked yet still within the code.

One of the victims injured in the ride accident at the Ohio State Fair last year has died.

The family?s attorney confirmed 18-year-old Jennifer Lambert died Friday at 8:05 p.m.

She was last at a long-term care facility in Geneva.

One of the six gondolas on the Fire Ball at the fair broke loose, killing 18-year-old Tyler Jarrell, and injuring seven others on July 26, 2017.

Lambert suffered a traumatic brain injury.

Her attorney told 10TV earlier this year that it was unknown whether she would ever be self-supporting.

In April, a $1.7 million settlement was approved for Lambert.

Or don't go near any rides. You never know, a ride could break down, and a rider could hit you on the way down.
